Arizona and Southern California
Where in Arizona and Southern California are good places to travel at the end of January and the beginning of February.
We prefer to sightsee the scenery rather than sit by a pool or go to museums. We are hoping for mild weather, but not necessarily hot weather.

There is a ton of information about Arizona and California on this forum. Just do a search for either one and enjoy reading for several hours.
It would also help to know how many days you are traveling and where you are flying into and out of. It seems obvious that you will be renting a car. Dropping off a car in a different state can be expensive so that is another thing to consider.
In Arizona I would think you would want to see the Grand Canyon and Sedona. If you want time in the desert, Tucson is nice. From Tucson, you could drive over to San Diego and then start your way north, stopping in Santa Barbara, Carmel/Monterey and San Francisco.
Weather in both states should be nice but not hot. Southern CA and AZ can be warm during the day but cools off at night. In Northern AZ you would probably get some snow and Northern CA could be chilly with rain. You might get rain all up and down the CA coast as January is one of the rainy months. So far this year has been very dry, though.

In Tucson the Arizona Desert Museum in Saguaro NP West, plants, flowers, animals etc. Beautiful.
San Xavier Del Bac Mission Church, south of Tucson.
Near Mesa (Phoenix) the Apache Trail, partly unpaved, nice route.
In N. Arizona Monument Valley and Canyon de Chelly, interesting navajo places.

We did this exact trip in February of last year. We started out in LA, stayed at the Marina del Rey Ritz Carlton (which was lovely). We visited Santa Monica, Malibu, Pasadena, Pacific Palisades, etc. We spent half a day in Hollywood to see the Chinese Theatre, footprints, the new Kodak Theatre, etc. We then took the drive on Sunset Blvd to look at the houses and visit UCLA. We shopped a lot in Santa Monica and ate at a wonderful restaurant right next to the pier on the beach (something crab or fish?). It was great.
Check out flights to Arizona from California. We found one for $39 a person. It was the easiest flight we've ever done. We always stay at the Hilton Tapitio Cliffs in Phoenix but there are many nice resorts such as Kierland, Biltmore, Boulders, Princess... etc. Lots to do in Phoenix. You can drive up to the Grand Canyon one day if you'd like or drive down to Tucson (which we are doing this February). You also can visit the many different towns around Phoenix such as Tempe and Fountain Hills.

I would also fly from LA to Phoenix. Check out Southwest Airlines. If you book at least three weeks in advance flights are usually $39 and there are many flights throughout the day. Cheaper than renting a car and paying gas and I'd say the drive might not be all that exciting anyway.
