Hi all,

I will soon be traveling to the Detroit area for business. I will need to visit many different bank branches in and around Detroit. Being a younger female and having never been to the area, I was wondering if there are specific areas to avoid (just like any city).
I only ask because I will be traveling alone.

Since you will probably be visiting during 'banking hours' my advice would be to scout out your destinations in advance via an online mapping program or a GPS to find the most efficient way to group your visits. It can seasily take an hour to travel from the northern suburbs to the southern surburbs at rush hour. I would stick to major roads and expressways and not plan on cutting across town on small side streets. If you have any specific locations you are travelling to/from and want more details, I'm sure either myself or someone else from the area would oblidge.

Keep in mind that I-75 is closed for a long term construction project through a portion of Detroit and you will have to use other routes if your business takes you in that area.

If you are in town overnight I would search this forum and tripadvisor for hotel recommendations.

I agree with the above post. Without knowing exactly where you're going it's pretty difficult to give any information. Because the region is so decentralized, there isn't really a good side and a bad side of town. Things change back and forth and flow into each other.

As Detroit is a car city, most businesses have nearby parking for their employees. The ones in the sketchy areas are aware of the situation and provide security for their lots or garages.

In addition to the construction on I-75 in Detroit, there is work in Madison Heights, Troy, Pontiac and Auburn Hills. There is also construction along I-94 in St. Clair Shores and Chesterfield with lane closures. For info on all the construction in the area, check www.michigan.gov/mdot.
