Areas of interest outside Boston
We will be travelling from Newport, RI to Logan Airport next weekend. Having already been to Boston before Newport, we're looking for somewhere to stay Friday night and Saturday til mid-afternoon in northern RI or south of Boston. Any suggestions?

There are many spots you could get to on the Cape , closer towards Boston in Plymouth area, as well as others - some of your interests might help choose an area that would best suit you -
are you looking for charm, history, museums, quaint towns or a city, slower or faster pace, down time to stroll around in a quiet town or site seeing? fine dining? You could even think of Providence - all depending on your interests if you'd like to share some of those.

I would choose between either the Lincoln/Concord/Lexington choice -in the area is the Decordova Museum, Drumlin farms and all teh historic with the Concord/lexington green and monuments, etc.
In Plymouth, you have the Plantation, the harbor with the Mayflower -
Personally I would prefer the west of Boston option, but you should google these areas/towns/ sites and attractions and see what appeals to you

Providence RI may fit your bill, as it's in the direct path from Newport to Logan, considering that you don't have much time.
I'm not sure if you have children or not but I'm assuming not. Providence is a very pretty, walkable city with a nice river running thru it. You may luck out and see the evening waterfires (not sure of the website for scheduling). As the home to Johnson and Wales culinary school you'll find an amazing amount of excellant owner operated restaurants. There's also Federal Hill which is the Italian section with many great italian rest. There's a few very good theatres as well.
You could check out the RISD musuem and walk Benefit St. to see Brown Univ. and many historic homes that you can visit. When finished you just hop on the 95n and head to Boston.
Enjoy!

I b elieve water fire runs through october in Providence, - the site is waterfire.org so you can check it out -we went once, it was fun - the fall weather was cool but nice and we ate along the rive and I am trying to remember the restaurant, if I can't I'll ask husband tonight and post back -
all Cybor said is true about Providence if you are looking for a small size city and the areas she mentioned - great restaurants, huge shopping mall, - but while some of the areas like Federal Hill might be historic/charm for some, it is not a small quaint village unique to New england in many ways - so you would have to do some googling and see what the different areas offer -

escargot is right Providence is a small city but I'm not sure you were only looking for a quaint village, if so than Prov. is not the place for you although it is a wonderful and very do-able city.
As for Federal Hill, it generally is a great place for the excellant food in an interesting environment - quaint - no, but you can walk to it from downtown.
The walk around areas that you can check out are to the east of the river - (not the Mall area which is on the west side of downtown). This area would include many historical buildings and sites too numerous to include here. Don't know though if you'll be historied out after coming up from Newport, if not, check out the East side of Prov.

Also being the home to RISD you'll find countless galleries as well.
Good luck!
