Are they unwrapping gifts in checked luggage?

I have seen security unwrap gifts in carry on but if I pack wrapped gifts in checked baggage will they rip thru them? Perhaps someone knows a web site with this type of info. Thank you.

Melinda,

I have seen this posted on the newsletter of several airlines.
Baggage limits, say you have a roller bag, a purse, a gift- you have to check your roller bag. They unwrap packages.
This is only an example, each airline might have variations. I believe I was reading American Airlines Website.
Their suggestion was pack and wrap when you get to your destination. Assemble small items in a small gift bag. Baggage restricted to two bag limit.
www.southwest.com, www.americanairlines.com
You can also get on their email newsletter list from their website.
It gives warnings, news and best of all specials!

I've had gifts unwrapped at customs several times in the past...way prior to Sept. 11. It's always a good idea to wrap them when you arrive!

Gifts in checked luggage probably won't need to be unwrapped unless you are pulled off line for a random security check.

I wouldn't take a wrapped package in my carry-on bag, however.

Melinda-Given the recent state of airport security, I would send my packages either Airborne or FedEx.

We just traveled Indy to Houston on Continental with a checked bag full of wrapped Christmas presents. They were not opened.
