Are there lots of mosquitos in Kauai?

We are going to Kauai in 3 weeks. I know it rains a lot there and mosquitos thrive in wet weather. Are we going to get eaten alive? We are staying at the Marriott Kauai Resort and Beach Club and we're not planning on doing any hiking or activities in the wild.

Any comments? Thanks.

I've been there three times and haven't seen one yet. Granted, I haven't done a lot of hiking in the jungle but we do always stay up north where it is the most tropical. Have fun, Harry

Don't worry...the millions of chickens will eat them...plus, since it rains all the time, their little wings get waterlogged and they are grounded.

Seriously, never had a major problem be we always go Nov or Dec/Jan.

Don't worry about it. It's not wet weather that attracts mosquitos, it's standing pools of fresh water... and so little of Kauai is developed there's not many standing pools of water around.

We've run into mosquitos only a few times in 15 years, and only in rainforests that were far removed from developed areas (except at Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens on the Big Island).

It's not that bad. We've been in July/August and the only problems we've had are in the evenings. I always put on bug repellent before going out at night just as a precaution.

The only time I've been bitten on Kauai was when we hiked the Kalalau trail, and believe me, if there are mosquitos anywhere they will find me.

The only time we had trouble was when we went on the ATV tour (Kipu Ranch) when we were in the jungly area on the river bank waiting to swing across the river on the rope swing. FUN!

The only mosquito bite I got in our last trip to Kauai in April, was received in the Pro Shop of the Kauai Lagoons golf course.... coincidentally, which is right next to your hotel! The last place you'd expect it, given all the other places we had been. But don't worry, we never even saw one, anywhere else there, and I spent a lot of time in "wild places" on that golf course....

Bellaza28, My wife is very susceptible to mosquito bites and always puts on repellent with DEET before we go out for the evening to dinner or sitting on the Lanai. They do not bother me, but she has been bitten if she does not wear the Deet.

BTW, we will be in Princeveille from 7/15 through 8/5 staying at the Cliffs. Drop me a line if you have any other questions.

Just got back from 10 days in Kauai. It was our third time, and for whatever reason, I thought the mosquitos were a lot worse this time. Definitely use the DEET if you are doing any hiking or venturing into any remotely jungle-like areas. We stayed at Pu'u Poa in Princeville, and I routinely got bites every time we hiked down to Hideaways beach. I also noticed that mosquitos were not the only culprits -- there were little flies that got me too!

That said, we had a wonderful time and cannot wait to go back. Have fun.

PS We stayed at the Marriott - we didn't get any bites and we spent a lot of time outdoors.

We just got back from 7 days on Kauai and never saw even one mosquito. We stayed in Poipu but spent a day on the North Shore including A day on Ke'e beach and hiking the first couple of miles of the Kalalau. We also spent time in Kapa'a, Waimea, and hiking down from Kokee Park and still no mosquitoes.

If they have them, you could not prove it by me.

Well, I think I'm coming back in December to look for them. If they have mosquitos on Kauai, my wife will find them.

Billy...

How can I forget about the HUGE spiders on Kauai!?!?!?

I saw one smack around a rooster one day.
The BIG ones only come out on sunny days so since it rains all the time you'll be safe.

B'man,
you married a lizard? :-?

Kal,

The real question is:
How does the full moon affect those spiders?:-?
