April Road Trip:Savannah & Charleston or Santa Fe?

I am looking for advice on an April road trip from Wisconsin. I would have at least a week(7-10)days and enjoy the drive. In the past I have driven to New Orleans, Georgia, Washington DC, and once out to Yellowstone, and another time to New England(those were fall trips) I have been to the southwest(AZ) several times but not recently and Santa Fe has always looked interesting.
Savannah and Charleston have also been calling me and I am not sure which to choose. I am also a photographer who likes to take a spring trip to get new material for my summer art shows, last year was Italy, so I need to stay stateside. What are the pros and cons of each destination?
Thanks,
Olympicgaym

April is the best time to visit Savannah and Charleston because the flowers would be in bloom. I am looking to do a similar trip and will most likely visit both Charleston and Savannah with stops in Beaufort and Jekyll Island. My husband had driven through Beaufort and wants to return.

Thanks for the reply, I love the South in the spring and both Beaufort and Jekyll would be included too. I have heard good things about Beaufort.

In the spring, my vote is for Savannah and Charleston. The dogwood and azaleas should be blooming then. If so, the area will be spectacular. Local guide books for Savannah will probably not direct you to one of the best areas for photography--Victory Drive. That is a highway running east/west located just south of the tourist area of town. The median strip is planted with azaleas and...get this...palm trees. A drive on this street takes you by many very old beautiful homes. Enjoy! That's my choice.

April is not the best time for Santa Fe. While the temps will be ok, there won't be much in the way of flowers or anything like that; if that is what you are seeking. Spring can be iffy and windy.

Autumn in Santa Fe is the nicest time for outdoor things and for photography IMHO. Summer is second nicest time. Of course, if you want to do museums etc, that would work in April.

Hope this helps...

Thanks all for your input, both destinations have been on my travel short list for some time now. I know both places have very different appeal.

Debi, thanks for the heads up on better weather and photo ops for the Fall in Santa Fe.

I have more thinking to do..
Thanks.
