Anza Borrego, CA

Hearing that February is not a good time to visit San Diego, we're now thinking of mid-March for 2 weeks. Actually will only spend a day or two in SD (want to see zoo and some museums) and then head to Anza Borrego and Borrego Springs to stay. Posts on Fodors are 6 years old, so hope someone can give some newer info.

Any comments on places to stay? The good, the bad, the ugly. Also wondering if about 5 days would be too long to spend there. Would plan to site see, do short, slow walks and soak up the scenery. Hopefully flowers will be blooming.

From there would like to head to Julian. Has anyone stayed there before? Again, all comments appreciated.

Finally head out to coast, near Carlsbad. Stay somewhere on the coast for a few days and then return to SD for flight home.

Not as big fan of just going to see rocks and the desert - such as in Anza Borrego. Suggest you spend more time in SD - Julian, etc. Julian is fun - up in the hills - with good pies - old mines to explore, scenic Lake Cuyamaca, etc. SD has many many things to do and inexpensive lodging - especially in Feb. Also suggest you consider Safari Park - formerly called Wild Animal Park - a "sister" to the Zoo and you can get discounts if you visit both. Also check out the other museums in Balboa Park, by the Zoo, drive over to Coronado, go to the Cove in La Jolla, drive up scenic Pacific Coast hiway, tour the old WWII aircraft carrier/museum - the USS Midway - and on and on.

BTW - SD gets a few winter storms that usually only last a day or two - and it can be sunny and 70 at the beach most days in Feb or March, warmer inland.

Five days would be too long for us in Anza Borrego. In the time you have you could easily include the Palm Springs area and Jashua Tree NP.

I always think of Julian as a place to stop, but not as a place to stay. You will go through Julian on your way to Anza Borrego NP; you could do a loop going back to San Diego.

We stayed in Borrego Springs once several years ago at a place about which all I can remember is that we didn't want to return.

I've heard Breggo Valley Inn is the best place to stay, but it isn't cheap.

We always stop for a meal at Carlees's Place. The food is good, the servings are ample, the service is friendly and welcoming, and the price is right.

There is a market in town where you can buy groceries if you have a room with a kitchen and want to do some cooking.
