Anything to Do In KANSAS CITY?

Westport village has clubs, conutry club plaza has architecture and fountains modles after Seville Spain. Visited Nelson Atkins museum ans sculpture garden, the Arabia Steamship was dug up and recreated at the city market place. Nearby you can walk thru history in the Truman's presidential library, in Independence. Yes there are things to do in Kansas City. Hallmark Headquarters has a pleasant tour, Hallmark Center puts up Big Tree and Ice Skating rink in November, and Country Club Plaza turns on thousands of lights Thanksgiving week.

If you like fried chicken, pork chops, home fries, mashed potatoes, etc., served family style (or can order for one person, also), try one of the two Stroud's Restaurants. They also have full bar service. One is in Kansas City and one in Kansas City North.
Their food is great. I used to live in Kansas City, now live in Lawrence, KS and work in Topeka, KS. We have meetings in KC where we invite people in from all over country. If they want this type of food, this is where we ALWAYS take them to eat.
It's a fun place. Their motto, which the employees were on T-Shirts: "We choke our own chickens". I think they probably have these T-Shirts for sale as souvenirs, too.

I was born and raised in Kansas City and left to move to Seattle 20 years ago, but all the suggestions were good ones-you might also want to pick up one of Calvin Trillen's books about eating in Kansas City although many of the places (Winstead's yes even Sroud's) have changed a lot over the years-although still yummy!)
Don't even get into the KC barbecue wars! My favorite is Rosedale! But there is a lot to choose from-just ask Calvin
have fun

You have to check out the Jazz Hall of Fame, which just opened. It is located near the historic 18th & Vine district. It is also where the Negro Baseball League Museum is located.
The Truman Library now features Harry's love letters to Bess, if you are interested in historic things.
A great jazz club is the Phoenix, located in the Garment District downtown, near 8th and Broadway. It gets very crowded early.. but they have another one located in the Station Casino, near the Missouri River.
Enjoy the city! I've lived in or near KC for more than 15 years. It has a little of everything.

Hi Joyce,
I read that you now live in Lawrence. Could you give me any insight about the area. I'm from Wisconsin and have applied to KU for graduate school.
I'd be interested in any thoughts you have about the area.
Thanks so much for any sort of insight you would be willing to share!
Becca

Rip: That totally put a smile on my face. I didn't even notice the date.
Chris: Thanks for asking. Well, mostly I guess I am wondering about the atmosphere of Kansas. I'm applying to KU for grad school and I already know the academic part would be really good, so that isn't the issue.
As Lawrence is a pretty decent hike by car or a pretty penny for an airline ticket for a college student, I won't go visit unless I'm accepted.
What do people like to do for fun? I know it depends on the person, but is there any generalities? For me to like a place I guess there needs to be a decent coffee shop for hanging out and beauty(the KU brochures do a good job at showing that part) and a decent place to shop, to name a few.
What would rent go for in Lawrence or where you live? I think the academic program is the best of all of the schools I'm applying to so if I was accepted, I would most likely go no matter what, but still I'm curious about the area.
I know this is pretty vague, mostly though, if you could offer any insights about Kansas or what you noticed when you moved there if you weren't originally from the area would be great. Also, and this is controversial, but what is it like living in the "Bible Belt"? I consider myself a moderate liberal and I believe in religion, but at the same time, what is it like there? WI is generally moderate to conservative and I'm more than fine here and I know I will be in a college town, so that will change it slightly too, I imagine, but still I have gotten a few looks when people find out that I'm considering Kansas...
Sorry this is kinda long, but thanks again, Chris.
