anyplace to stop for a quick bite to eat heading south on 81 from PA to North Carolina.

We are driving on 81 instead of 95 hoping that traffic will be lighter, and because the ride is beautiful in the mountains further south on 81. I know it's a pretty rural area. Can anyone recommend a place to stop to eat?

Well...

I recall that there were some unique places to eat near James Madison University.

Besides that, the city of Roanoke is not too far off the highway.

Blacksburg VA and Knoxville TN are both great college towns that have some interesting food spots...but I cant remember the name of any of them.

Any suggestions from those who live in the area?

Oh yeah...there are about 1,000 Waffle Houses once you get below VA.

If you have not been there before you might want to stop once for the experience of it all...though you probably wouldnt go twice (and I dont blame you).

Thanks for the suggestions. James Madison area will be too close because we are stopping the first night close to the PA border just off 81. Does anyone know of a good place to eat in or around Roanoke?

I've done this trip at least ten times and other than your typical fast food and sit- down resturants like Cracker Barrel, I don't remember anything unique. Of course, I more interested in finishing my trip so I don't venture too far off the interstate.

We drive 81 from NC to NY all the time to visit our family. Lexington, VA is our favorite place to stop, both for eating and lodging. The town of Lexington is quaint and historical - some really nice places to eat. Vegetarian restaurant is great and not expensive. You'll find whatever you need in Lexington. Enjoy!

Thanks for the info Laura. I guess I'd better get out my map. I have to check out where Lexington is. We're starting out from southern PA for that particular leg.
