Hello all... a friend of mine is taking a really short-notice trip in a couple days and is interested in seeing some of the old covered bridges in Indiana. Looking for any advice about such a trip and any suggestions for Indiana in general. Thanks so much.
Sandi

Ooops, I just realized my mistake. It's Iowa, not Indiana. Sorry!

One of the bridges just burned. I think they suspect arson. Latest news?
Maybe your friend SHOULD visit Idniana:
Madison County, IA: 6 covered bridges
(www.madisoncounty.com/bridge.html)
Parke County, IN: 32 covered bridges
(www.coveredbridges.com)
Also:
Ashtabula County, OH: 16 covered bridges
(www.coveredbridgefestival.org)
Lancaster County, PA: 28 covered bridges
(www.800padutch.com/covbrdg.shtml)
I read that the one used in the movie recently burned as well. I'm sure a google search can find the details.
Yep, the main one from the movie was burned down last week.
Ooops, you're too late.
Note to Dave,
Make that 31 in Parke County, Indiana. Yet more history erased by an arsons deranged mind.

Winterset (county seat of Madison County, IA) is my hometown. Although I haven't lived there in 16 years, I visit my family in Iowa quite often and have taken several of my friends to see the bridges and everything else that Winterset has to offer (and it is really quite a lot). In fact, I'm planning to go there in about a month during the Covered Bridge Festival (Oct 12&13).
Dave is right, there are other states with a lot more covered bridges in them than Iowa. But I'm somewhat biased. Other than the bridges, there is also: Francesca's House (the house in the movie), a historical complex (museum, restored late 1800's mansion, railroad depot), John Wayne's Birthplace Museum, and the best and biggest city park I have ever seen in a small town.
And yes, Cedar Bridge was burned down by an arsonist a few weeks ago. There were 2 bridges featured in the book and movie. Cedar Bridge and Roseman Bridge. It was insured for $250,000. Fortunately the bridge was refurbished several years ago, so they have the ability to rebuild it. The bad news: it will cost about $1 Million to rebuild and, of course, will just be a replica. But the people of Winterset want to rebuild, so they'll raise the money somehow.
