Anyone have any ideas for a single to do on Thanksgiving? Skiing or a European city?

Anyone have any ideas on where I could spend the long Thanksgiving weekend? I will be flying, training or busing it from NYC. I went to Milan one year and it was great so while the the long flight and limitted time look like a hassle I could do that.

I love to ski but have never gone on a long ski weekend alone. Somehow skiing alone does not seem very safe. Was thinking about Park City Utah or resorts around Denver. Would consider Taho but will they have snow in November? Can they keep man made snow cold that time.

London is great at that time because they've already gotten into the Christmas spirit. Lots to see and do and you can warm up in a pub.

Thanks Merilee I lived in London for a year+ and have made several trips back. So it kind of has this too familar feel for me. Would consider outer regions and even Scotland but to tell you the truth Portugal, Italy, Paris all seem more appealing to me. Never been to Portugal.

Do Portugal! I spent a week there last year and am hoping to go back for a 3-day weekend at some point. There is so much to do/see right in and around Lisbon.

There are a lot of great singles vacations out there. I know there are biking trips in Napa, cooking trips to Tuscany and Paris, and of course, Club Med Cancun. You also don't necessarily have to ski alone. Have you ever heard of ski share houses? There are tons of them in Killington and Mt. Snow. Just pick up the VOICE and check the Shares section of the classified. A person rents a ski house, and then fills up the bedrooms (usually 2 to a room) by selling shares. Very inexpensive, but you usually have to buy the minimum of 4 weekends at approximately $700 total. Great way to meet a guy and some new girlfriends. Half the fun is going to the share parties and meeting the people in the house, or potential housemates. There are usually houses advertised in all age ranges.

Forget Tahoe. There's a chance of snow then but it won't be "good" skiing until later in the season and certainly not much of a scene

Sloane, I hate the family thing also, the in-laws, the kids, etc. I say that is why they day after Thanksgiving is the big shopping day. Everyone wants out of the house. Can I go too??(smile) I was wondering if the Islands wouldn't be closer for you versus Europe? Just a thought. Hurricane Season is close to being history. Good luck and Happy Holidays.

Have you ever been to Montreal and/or Quebec City? They're both great long weekend destinations.

I once took a Caribbean cruise, by myself, over Thanksgiving. Had a wonderful time. The ship threw a huge traditional Thanksgiving dinner.

Now don't make a face--but the Bellagio in Vegas would be an excellent choice!

Thanks everybody!!!
What an amazing number of options. I had no idea about the ski shares in Vermont. Well I knew they were out there but I really thought they would be for youngens, I am 41. Just heard the stories about those shares, partying all night, people bringing friends having them sleep on the floor.

Suzanne that sounds great I was going to go to Lisbon one year but I thought it would be overwhelming in a long weekend. That was the year I went to Milan, I basically went to eat and shop.

Ellen how do you know about all this stuff? A bike trip in Napa, I would love that!!!

So many great ideas it’s difficult to thank you all. Whatever I don't do this time I have so many ideas for the future.

Barbara thanks for the word on Tahoe.

Lannie thanks but I don't think I am a cruiser, I am kind of a can't sit still person. I also expect that they would be more than I was looking to spend in a long weekend. Do you think singles do those cruises? Would be fun to be out on that water with no land in sight.

xxx I go to Hawaii in summer and I also always expect the carib to be more expensive and booked out. Am I wrong? I kind of know I can book a cheapy flight to Europe and stay in a hotel for 80 bucks a night less if I want to really rough it.

xx I did make reservations for Tremblatt last night, in the village. Do you think they will be able to maintain snow that time of year? Season only opens November 22. Did you ever ski around Quebec City?

How positive you all are, thanks so much!!! No longer licking my single wounds. Thanks for the effort everyone.

Sloane,
I was in Portugal a few years ago and I heard that the Island of Madeira, which is a Portugese territory is beautiful around Christmas time. I plan to visit there in the near future.

Sloane, you're selling yourself too short. You have a lot to offer and you have a soul. Rather than waste your money on the next great sybaritic retreat, offer your talents to your community this Thanksgiving.

How? Well, during business hours, contact the Mayor's Voluntary Action Center (MVAC) at (212)788-7550 to set up an interview. Evening interviews can be scheduled. MVAC will help match your talents with a local (NYC) group that could really use your contribution of time and talen.

How do I know about shares? Because I was in them in the Hamptons for 10 yrs. Yes, when I was younger it was like animal house. But, as we got older & priorities changed it got much tamer & more productive. I actually met my husband out there & at first I couldn't stand him and didn't want him in the house! Ski houses are also tamer than Hamptons shares because if your primary goal is skiing, you will not be drinking yourself into oblivion at night. Also, when you get into a house whose ad reads -'mid 30's - 40's' or just plain '40's', the days of people crashing on the floor are over. At 40+ you work hard & want to live like a person on the weekends. The best part is calling the ads and going to share parties all over the city & meeting different people. When you find the right group, you will know it. They will share some of your interests outside of skiing, be friendly, and eager to give a newbie information. And, you can take a share that is 4 other weekends & not necessarily go there for Thanksgiving, it is just 4 more weekends of something to do. Whatever you decide, please post back. I'd love to hear how things work out. If you have any more questions about shares, just ask. I will keep checking this thread.

But Paul sybaritic retreat is my middle name . Just kidding, I have worked more than half my life in non-profit and public service so I do feel that I have done my share or a share that makes me comfortable giving back to myself. Good to have that info though, in case something does get in the way of Thanksgiving, last year I was scheduled in the cafe at ground zero but they cancelled the night shift at the last minute.

Thanks Ellen that does sound fun intimadating on my own but fun nonetheless. How did you find out about the bike trips in Napa?
