Any runners out there ? Marathon Training while in Maui/Kauai - suggestions?
Hi. We will be taking our first trip to Hawaii this August. We will be spending 4 days in Kauai - (grand Hyatt) and 4 days in Maui (Sheraton). My husband is training for the Marine Corp Maration in OCtober. Any suggestions for where he can do some long runs while we are on vacation? Thanks.

I have very pleasant memories of running in that area while on vacation! From the Sheraton, he could go south to Lahaina, following the pathways through the hotels and then the trail system (and a little bit of road) that runs next to the water. Beautiful. I did that several times. It's not a particularly long run, but you could keep going south past Lahaina, running alongside the road that follows the water, and make it as long as you want.
There's some traffic on the roads, but usually good shoulders, and it's definitely not an interstate.
Heading north from the Sheraton, it gets a little more hilly, but there is less and less traffic the further you go. I didn't run that way, but we drove it. Lots of beautiful beaches.
Tell him good luck in DC. The Marine Corps was my first marathon, and I loved it.

Poipu has some decent roads to run on but you still have to be careful because of the dog gone tourists!
Run the whole length of the Poipu Rd and back and maybe take the Koloa Bypass Rd and do a loop.
He can also run out to Spouting Horn but that road is pretty narrow.
He'll have some nice hills/uphill grades too like on Pee Rd and up to Spouting Horn.
Use Google Maps and it gives you some good ideas.

I don't know where you are from, but please note that it's very hot & humid in August here in Hawaii, no matter which island. If your husband is not used to the humidity, he needs to mentally prepare at least!

Mels...I believe the Marine Corp Marathon is in Arlington VA.
Gets a bit humid back there too.
Billlaaaaay...hope you're back at the house cooking him a good breakfast like I do for Mrs Kal when she runs her CocoCoast Route.

Ooops...forgot to add that my one-time marathoner loves to run on the hardpacked sand of lovely Hanalei Bay. He runs back and forth as I sit there in my recliner beach chair and read my Vanity Fair magazine. Life is good, no?

Kal,
Marine Corps is at the end of October, when I did it in 2005 it was 40 degrees at the start and never got above the low 50s, some of the best running weather I've encountered in a race.
And boy do I wish I had had the sense to ask about running paths when we visited Maui several years ago--the routes you describe sound like fun.
