Any Recommendations For Short Term Manhattan Apartment Rental?

Hi All,

We're from Scotland & considering a trip to New York in March/April 2006. We're not sure exactly how many will be travelling but as there are likely to be at least 5 of us an apartment makes more sense than a hotel.

I didn't really find much to my liking on VRBO, so I was wondering if any Fodorites could recommend other reputable agencies?

Also, one agency which does look interesting is WooGo - does anyone have any experience of using this company?

Thanks for your help.

Jim

Do NOT under any circumstances use WooGo. They are the very disreputable co. also know as yourstay or urbanstay. Lots of info online about how they fleece tourists around the world.

Now for suggestions, nyhabitat.com and citylightsnewyork.com are both fine. There are also a number of apt/hotels with family rooms for 5 where you'd get the benefit of daily maid service etc. in a hotel but also have convenience of apt. size and kitchen. The Salisbury, the Beacon, the Best Western Hospitality, Murray Hill Suites and the hotels in the Affinia.com group would all work.

Agree that with a party of at least 5 an apartment makes good sense. I've looked on VRBO and also was underwhelmed with the offerings. Places where I have had very good luck in Manhattan are www.metro-home.com, the chain of Affinia Hotels (especially like the Dumont) and www.craigslist.org under the vacation rental section. Hotel prices are through the roof in NYC, and these have proven reliable alternatives for me.

JJBhoy - You have received some very good advice.

Will just add The Milburn Hotel www.milburnhotel.com is in the same area as the Beacon recomended by Mclaurie but costs a few less $'s.

Another option you may want to consider is The Embassy Suites Hotel located on North End Ave. Located across from the river and includes a terrific full breakfast and happy hour drinks and snacks. Very good value for your $'s.

See reviews at www.tripadvisor.com

Good luck and please report back.

Thanks for your replies - especially to mclaurie for the warning re WooGo.

I will check out all of your suggestions & maybe top this message again after the holidays when the traffic picks up again.

Merry Christmas to Fodorites everywhere!!

Hi Scarlett!

How nice to hear from you & what a pleasant surprise to see one of Patrick's reports - I will certainly look into it. Wouldn't it be great if we could have our old friends back here where they belong in 2006?

It's Christmas Day here already so best wishes from Bonnie Scotland!

Just to give an update as requested.

We have now booked our flights to arrive in NYC on 5th March 2006 for 4 nights. Our party will only consist of 4 people (all adults) but for reasons too boring to go into we will need 3 separate sleeping areas i.e. 3 bedrooms or, alternatively, 2 bedrooms & a sofa bed in the living room.

I have reserved two 1 bedroom "deluxe suites" at the Beekman Tower which will suit our sleeping arrangements and I think I have got a good rate - $199 dollars a night for each suite. Also, because I made the booking through www.venere.com I haven't yet been charged for the reservation and can cancel it before 27th February without any penalties.

Reviews of the Beekman Tower both here & on tripadvisor are almost all positive but the one slightly negative note seems to be the location - Mitchell Place, just next to the United Nations.

I intend to keep looking but I doubt that I will find a comparable deal anywhere else. Does anyone think that
the Beekman's location should put me off?

Thanks again for your help,

Jim

$199 a night is pretty good for Manhattan. I used to work near the Beekman- hardly out of the way when you consider Manhattan is a big island -and probably quieter and cleaner than anything in the Times sq area. Its a middle class neighborhood. You just won't find very good shopping or eating, except at the UN. But you aren't far from the Lexington subway-nor from Grand central- you can get anywhere easily. I would check Craigslist. I used to book suites at the Shelburne. Look them up for a price comparison.
