Any info about the Broadway Hotel

I'm a total novice about NYC. Hotels are really expensive. I saw a place on Price Line, called the Broadway Hotel. It's at 230 West 101 St. It's in Manhattan , sort of northwest of Central Park. It said prices starting at $105.
That seems too good! I read several reviews, they were so so. Most emphasized that it was a "hostel"n not a hotel. Not sure what the difference is? Appreciate any info. I'm very concerned about being in a safe area.

Why is lodging so expensive in NY? Supply and demand? So many people in such a small area? I just went on-line and booked a room in Atlanta for tomorrow at a 3-star Holiday Inn for $54 tax included and of course parking isn't an issue.

New Yorkers probably wonder why us people from "flyover -country" are so concerned about safety? Atlanta is probably at least as dangerous as NY. Down here , we can provide our own security.

Appreciate any info or advice about NY. Have any question about the "south" maybe I can help.

A hostel often has dorm style rooms and shared baths, while a hotel has private rooms and (usually) private baths. I believe that the Broadway has both types of rooms.

It's not the area I would where I would chose to stay, but as long as it's near a subway stop, you can get around easily.

Atlanta is way more dangerous than NYC. New York is the safest large city in the country.

And the hotels are so expensive because everything is expensive here - from the cost of land to real estate taxes to salaries, etc. And yes, there is the law of supply and demand - we had more than 55 million visitors last year - all looking for good hotels at bargain prices. NYC is NOT Atlanta.

Have never heard of the Broadway - but it says a hostel. This may well mean shared dorm rooms and probably means shared baths. Don/t know if this one is clean/reliable or not. If you want a hostel the Hosteling International in the same area - uptown not far from Columbia University gets very good reviews. A bed and locker in a shared dorm room is about $40 per night.

$100 is a hotel room price in NYC only in Jan or Feb and that is on a discount sight. For most of the year $250 per night is the average for a 3* room that will hold 2 people. During high season (mid Sept through the holidays) expect it to be higher.

If give us specific dates and tell us how many you are people can make recos - which may be out side the city with such a minute budget.

Hotel rooms are expensive in NYC partly b/c of supply and demand and partly because real estate prices are crazy and that's because Manhattan is an island with a limited land mass. Atlanta sprawls and you need a car to get around. As far as safety, tou've been watching too much tv.

There are far better options to that hostel. Thepodhotel.com might work.

That hotel doesn't look good to me. It's not the location. It's not bad there anymore. But you don't want to stay in a hostel unless you are 20 and have no other choices. If you want to save money, then simply stay in a perfectly good chain hotel in Long Island City Queens, which is exactly one subway stop from Manhattan and closer to most tourist sights than that hostel.

TennesseGuy:

Please tell us what dates you are coming and will you be by yourself? Yes it is supply and demand that drives the cost.

Book a hotel that you can cancel and keep looking for an offer on www.quikbook.com or www.travelzoo.com

Look on www.tripadvisor for hotel reviews.

Have fun in fabulous NYC

It's still up in the air; would like to come this fall, but may have to wait till later, because of work. It would be at least me and my wife, possibly an adult son.
I guess I do have sort of a "phobia" about NY. Sorry! Not really sure why? I guess it's cultural.
Our current job has took us into NY state for the first time. We've been to several upstate cities. The countryside is beautiful (actually looks a lot like East Tennessee) with a lot more winter.
The people we've have been nice.
I just never thought of NYC as a fun fabulous place. I always imagined it as bad, dangerous, etc. After traveling in upstate, I'm willing to find out different!!!

My mind can believe that is true; now just getting my heart to believe it.

"I guess it's cultural."

No. It's your opinion.

NYC is very safe. I definitely feel more comfortable walking down the streets of NYC than Atlanta or Nashville or Knoxville or any city anywhere else.

Believe it. Not believe it. But definitely don't decide not to visit based on your biased and incorrect opinion.

Not sure why you can't accept the facts. If you google national crime statistics you will see that the incidence of serious crimes is the lowest of large cities and it is many times less than other places you might feel comfortable (like New Orleans).

It would be very sad if you let your prejudices overcome the facts and prevent you from enjoying a great city.

TennGuy:

Your feelings are valid. NY City is not like Eastern Tenn., but maybe that is why is it an exciting destination. It is unlike what you are used to.

If you are hesitant, try to remember why you wanted to go to NY. If it is shows and you want to stay in the car centric south, pick a weekend and see Broadway at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta. Swing up to Greenville SC and visit the Peace Center.

Good luck.
