Wow, they're so expensive this time of year. Wish I could find something like "Rent-a-Wreck." The lowest price I've found is at Enterprise -- and they're closed when my flight arrives @ 7 PM. Don't know if it will be worth renting for a day from another company -- and then driving in from P'ville to exchange for Enterprise's lower rate the following day.
Trying Priceline, but so far they haven't accepted my offers,
Got any good ideas? (It's hard to ride a rooster ... especially with all the luggage

have you tried carrentalhawaii.com ? that gave me the lowest. otherwise, try link from islandair.com (right side). that also gave me lower...but not as low as carrentalhawaii.com. Good luck~~
I've been using www.discounthawaiicarrental.com. One thing I like is that they link to the actual car rental sites, and usually no charge for 2nd driver. The Thrifty link recognizes my Blue Chip number so I still get the advantage of going to the fast line. (If I was lucky enough to stay for 4 weeks like you I might not mind an extra 20-30 minutes in line! My trips are just 4-7 days)
In Kauai, Priceline got us Alamo. We also got very slow service, an elderly car with lots of miles which I didn't like but we didn't have any trouble with it and the price was right. Based on what we saw at the airport, Alamo is the volume renter there.
Thanks so much! I got a considerably lower rate with Alamo at carrentalhawaii than I've found anywhere else so far. (Love this forum.)
PS. Still waiting to receive a quote from discounthawaiicarrental.com.
Discounts are also available for Alamo and others through Costco's website.
I got so excited when Costco was mentioned. Just shopped there yesterday -- but hadn't thought about renting a car through them.
Unfortunately (and surprisingly) ... $175 HIGHER through Alamo than at carrentalhawaii.
Thanks, though.
Make a reservation at the cheapest rate you can find and keep searching. The further ahead of time, we have found, you make you reservation, the cheaper it is unless you can get a last minute deal.
I was using sidestep.com to search for car rentals last week for the week of July 12th. The rates were about $400 a week. I checked around, on a Sunday evening, came back, and thrifty had lowered their rate to $150 for the week! Car rental companies and hotels seem to raise or lower their rates on Sunday evening as do the trains in europe (our experience).
My daughter got a cheaper car rental rate through Budget in Kauai using the Costco coupon than I did just using the site.
I should have told you the rates are for San Diego for July 12th.
If you are renting for 4 weeks, is it possible to lease a car?
I'm sorry Costco didn't pan out!
Happy ending! I started with prices considerably over $800 for the four weeks. So I was quite pleased with the $716 quote from carrentalhawaii. But ... I decided to try $18/day @ Priceline. It got rejected.

The next day I was about to reserve the $716 rate and thought, "Hmm. It's a new week (Monday) -- maybe I should try Priceline one more time."
My $18/day bid was accepted (by Alamo). Four weeks with all fees and taxes: $674.
Moral of the story: it pays to shop around. That's $138 lower than the lowest price I could find at the Alamo website--and $42 less than carrentalhawaii.
That'll pay for a couple of bowls of saimin
I have found Priceline to be consistently THE best way to book a car on our 2 trips to the Hawaiian islands that we take every year. Even if you don't get your bids at first they eventually come through. It is by far the cheapest way to rent!
do you have to line up at the counter when you buy from priceline.com? can we check in with computer kiosk?
You're not going to that overated dump, Hamura's for the saimin I hope.
If you're a Quicksilver member you can do the quick check-in regardless of whether you reserved it through Priceline or directly through Alamo.

And re: Hamura's ... I thought I'd give it one more try ... um, er ... just be sure it's still "Oh, NO" -- instead of Ono
oh....so hamura is not so good?
any other saimin place you would recommend?
