Some fantastic old growth coral can be found at Ho'ona Bay, off Keahole Point (near the Natural Energy Lab). There's not much in the way of extensive coral reefs off the Big Island because the island is relatively young (at least in geologic terms). But you can find some very nice formations off the coast of the Place of Refuge, and Pahoehoe Beach.

There is also lovely coral on the east side in the Puna District at the Kapoho Lagoons, which is a marine reserve. I saw blue coral for the first time there last week when we snorkled. Have a great time!
