We're supposed to go to NY last weekend of October but looking at the hotel prices around this time we're instead thinking about going to CT. We can always take the train into NY over the day? Do you know of any nice b&b's or hotels in the Litchfield area? Longing to see some fall colors this looks like a nice place to be? How's the foliage end of October and are there things to do in Litchfield and how long does it take to go into NY City from there?
Any affordable nice hotels around CT-how about Litchfield?

Litchfield is a beautiful town in one of the more scenic parts of Connecticut. Foliage varies from year to year but late October, while possibly past peak, should still have some color. the only hotel I've used in the area was quite expensive -- The Litchfield Inn, but there may be some less expensive B&Bs around. The town is not convenient to NYC. It is two hours distant, with little in the way of public transportation.
You can get some nice midtown hotels in the $200 range on priceline, should you want to reconsider and visit NY.
The leaves are getting prettier in central CT, but seem to be a little less vibrant than in past years, more brown mixed in with the yellows and reds. The oaks are still green though.
If you plan to go to NYC from Litchfield, you can do what the locals do, take metro north from one of the stations along the shore and avoid having to drive and park in the city. If you go to the eastern part of the state, you could take amtrack in to the city or drive to New Haven and take metro north. Metro north has more time options and is less expensive than am track.
Thanks for all your advice and help!(I feel like I'm all over the place now trying to figure out what to do. So please forgive me for my sometimes confusing and repeated questions.) I didn't know Litchfield was two hours away-that might be stretching it. The best option as of now is still to stay in NYC and maybe get on a Metro North an hour to see some foliage.
Hmmm . . . well, there's likely to be some color in Central Park. Or you could go up to The Cloisters and have the view across the Hudson to the Palisades. Or you might take a Hudson cruise up to Bear Mountain. http://www.circleline42.com/site/browse.aspx?product=134 All those would be easy ways to see some foliage.
Not sure about other public transit options for the Hudson Valley, which would probably be your best best.
