Any affordable motels in New England?
We're planning on going to New England and see New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, Cape Code, Boston and more in late September. Hopefully do some "leafpeeping" and see as much as we can in ten days. One of the places I can't wait to see is where they filmed "On the Golden Pond" and "How about Bob". Is that same house from the movie still there by the way ? To keep this trip within budget. We're thinking of splurging on a nice hotel some nights and take into a cheaper motel along the way in other places. Any good recommendations and are there still inexpensive motels (motel 6) along this way since it's such a "touristy roadtrip"?

I think "On Golden Pond" was actually shot near Meredith, NH on parts of Lake Winnepausauke. The first time I saw the movie, I said, that it looked like Winnepausauke, and while traveling there not long after read a sign that said the movie was indeed filmed there, (hear "rasberry" to old boyfriend. Anyway that area of NH is quite beautiful.
As far as inexpensive hotels, if you stop at any of the rest stops on the Mass Pike or 95, there is a travel guide that will give you discounted hotel rates, some as low as $35 a night.
While in the area, you might enjoy a stop in Laconia, Meredith, Center Harbor (pronounced Cena Haba, The Weirs, the Annalee Doll Factory, The Flume, Old Man of the Mountain, (currently undergoing a face life, hey the guy is really old and needed a nip and tuck) and Indian Head.
You also might enjoy dinner or lunch at a local legend restaurant "Harts Turkey Farm".
There is also quite a bit of outlet shopping in the area and you might find out more on one of the NH tourist websites.
Have a great time.

Hi,
Do you mean "What About Bob?" with Bill Murray and Richard Dreyfuss?
That was filmed at Smith Mountain Lake in Moneta, Virginia.
Anyway, Lake Winnepausauke is beautiful, Wolfeboro is a cute town. You can hit the Maine coast if you want to see ocean. The Stowe, VT area is very nice, the nearby town of Manchester, NH is a nice stop too.
Good luck!

There is a Red Roof Inn just off the Mass Pike (I-90) in Natick, MA. That is just before the exit for 95-N, if you choose to go that route to NH.
If you take 495-N, it is a bit mroe challenging. There are Holiday Inns and the like along 495, but I cannot specifically recall Motel 6 or Super 8 or the like along that route.
I live in central Mass, and we have found in recent years that peak foliage is gone by Columbus Day, so September may not be a bad choice for our area.

You can go to the Motel 6 website and find the facilites by state....that may give you a better idea of what is along your route. There are many different ways to head North into NH and VT....From western MA, you can take 91-N, from central MA, you can take 495-N to Rte 3 or Rte 93, or the Mass Pike to 95N. So much of it will also depend on your itinerary.
In Auburn, MA, there is a Hoilday Inn Express right off I-290.

Rural New England, like most other parts of the country does have it's share of inexpensive, mom and pop motels. There is a string of fairly nice ones in Twin Mountain New Hampshire. Rte 1 on the Maine coast from Kittery up to Kennebunkport is motel alley, and some of them are fairly inexpensive. In Vermont they are less common, but near large ski areas like Killington there are many. You may also want to look into farm b&b's which can be relaxing and inexpensive. One tip for seeing beautiful scenery in rural New England - don't be afraid to go off the beaten path - explore gravel roads and winding blacktops thru the mountains - you're sure to get many photo ops that way. If you are coming in late Sept, you will be at the early side of foliage season, which usually peaks around Columbus day in central NH and Vt. However, even then places can fill up quickly, so start surfing the web for places to stay.
