Another JFK to Manhattan Question

I know this has been addressed many times. But I’m not sure of my best choice, given my arrival time.

We (two of us) are scheduled to arrive at JFK at 5:45PM on a Monday. We will have luggage and will be heading to the Times Square area.

Taxi – or train?

Thanks so much!

It is a question of money v. carrying your luggage on the subway. A cab is a fixed amount but with a tip and the tunnel the cost will be about $75. The Airtrain and subway to Times Square area for two will cost $15.50. Do not take the LIRR from Jamaica, if you are going to TS. Either you will need a cab or you will schlep your luggage through heavy pedestrian traffic from Penn Station.

For the subway take the "E" train and depending on the exact address you need get of at 50 St or 42nd Street.

Thank you! We will be staying at the Doubletree on W. 40th Street, between 8th & 9th (closer to 9th).

I don't want to drag luggage up and down subway steps. So... I think I'm ruling out the train.

Cost is not a huge concern, but I also saw that there is a shared airport shuttle for $22 pp. It might be worth the $50 - $55 savings over a taxi.

The shuttle is a bad idea unless you are sure you will be the first drop-off.

Thanks so much. This has helped me see that a taxi is my best option. The savings are not worth the extra time and hassle.

The train is absolutely worth the hassle for me because you can almost completely avoid the issue of traffic and actually make it to your hotel considerably faster than by taking a car service, but if you are unwilling to carry your bags, there really is no choice.

You need to take a car service or taxi. A car service arranged in advance will be cheaper than a yellow taxi by as much as $12 (as little as $64 vs. $77 ... the base fare of a taxi is now $52 with a $5.30 in surcharges at that time, plus tolls and tip). However, my experiences recently have shown that at almost all times of the day the yellow taxi line is short these days given the influx of services like Uber and Lyft. So to maximize your time, take a regular taxi and prepare for a trip of up to 90 minutes during the Monday rush hour. You may luck out, but don't count on it. Traffic is horrible that that time of the day.

Thanks, Doug. I think it will all come down to how unwieldy our luggage is. I’m the king of carry-on. After having my luggage disappear twice, I’ve learned how little I need. I’ve done month-long trips with carry-on. I have even done a cruise with only carry-on. But this will be part of a 4-city trip that requires bringing materials for a conference, as well as formal wear.

By the time we are heading to NYC, the conference will be over and I might be able to fit one suitcase inside another, making the train a viable option.

We’ll see… Thank again to everyone for your help.
