Moloa`a is more off-the-beaten-path than `Anini. Two miles from the highway, down a narrow 2-lane country road -- and because the beach area has no public parking, the beach has very few visitors. If you want to "get away from it all" and just veg out at the house and beach, then Moloa`a will be perfect.
But if you'll be wanting to see more of the island, `Anini would probably be a better choice -- just off the highway, and mere minutes to north shore shopping, dining and other beaches.
Another point -- the reef which buffers `Anini from the ocean, makes the waters safer. No big surf, except during an outrageously large winter storm.
Anini is one of my favorite beaches. Gorgeous turquoise waters. I'm not a strong swimmer, but feel quite safe there due to the protecting reef. Also, you can walk a long way and not be over your head. There are many very nice rental cottages and houses along Anini Road. We rented a house in Hanalei last trip, but if we had it to do over again would stay at Anini. It's a close hop to either Hanalei or Kileaua (sp?). AND..Duane's Ono Burger stand is nearby.
We just returned from a two week stay in a cottage at the end of Anini Road.
I was amazed at the amount of traffic and the lack of privacy on a dead end road. We drove to Moloaa several days and just loved the serenity and solitude. Harry
