WOW! is all that true?? You can't convince me, a true Kauai naysayer! I still think it's one of the most boringest islands and I'll tell everyone if you want me to.

Very sad video. Unfortunately, this very same story can be told about a lot of cities in the US nowadays.

Hey Bill -- you convinced me -- we're going to the Caribbean next summer. Meanwhile . . . this year we'll stick to the north shore (of kauai) and try to avoid the worst of the traffic jams. With high gas prices and heavy traffic . . . attempting to see all of the island sounds more like work than vacation.

cm318,
That was my thought too...or the south pacific. Last time we were on the north shore, we stayed on the north shore and didn't stray far from Hanalei for most of the time. I'm afraid that that strategy might not be good for too much longer though.

To think the K9's were considered immature kindergarden pranksters. The horror!!!!!

Come to find out they were sugarcoating the dark reality. If things continue, the famous rooster may soon be endangered too! The Big Island has VOG, and another couple of years Kauai will have SMOG.

Thanks for posting iamq

Wow - I haven't been to Kauai in eons, but I used to love it. I had no idea what's been going on there. I feel like my heart has been ripped out and stomped on.

Last summer was our first time to Kauai, and we have been to all the other main islands at least once or twice at that point. I have to say, I was shocked at the traffic in Kapa'a. It was MUCH busier on Kauai than what I expected.

We are returning next month to Kauai (and our 3rd trip to the Big Island) because we want to explore it more, and we got a GREAT deal on Hotwire for the Grand Hyatt. But I don't expect a quiet little island anymore, although it is beautiful.

Honestly, we LOVE Hawaii, it is probably one of our favorite places, and this will be the 4th summer in a row that we've visited. But we've also visited the Caribbean a few times in teh last year and a half (Aruba, Turks and Caicos, Anguilla, and Bermuda) and found more of that escape/quiet/relaxation feeling on some of those islands.

Rather a catch 22, isn't it.

The very things that people love about the island are what brings more and more people every year, leading to more and more development.

Then all the development creates the things that people don't like and then complain about.

The video left out the part about all the drownings in Kauai!

Re: water quality at the beaches, here's a link where you can check on any current advisories. Meanwhile if you look in the archives under Oahu, you'll see that it's that island in particular that's had problem with sewage spills in recent months.....

Next year is Cancun for us. Now that should be good for rubbing elbows with a few people. Plus, they didn't mention all those pesky bugs on the island of Kauai. Those buggahs can hurt you!! Another reason to stay away.

icee,
They're saving the bugs, the lousy food and lack of nightclubs for the sequel.

Iceeu2,
Have fun in Cancun. I was there in the late 80's and liked it. We went 3 years ago and was really disappointed. It was so built up and was not a good place for family. We were there for only 2 nights and went to Playa del Carmen for 5 nights. It's less rowdy than Cancun, but is not my cup of tea either. I am not going back.

Well, my Hanalei friend, if that's the way it is, then I may just have to put up with the commercialization of Kauai!

You get any great priceline deals lately?

iceeu,

Have a great trip to Cancun, we just got back in May from our 6th trip to Yucatan and Quintana Roo.

Check out Akumal for great snorkeling and also Puerto Morelos is a great, laid back sleepy fishing village. We always rent a car, easy driving except in Playa downtown due to Avenida Quinta which is pedestrian zone.

Consider staying inland a night or two, Valladolid is nice colonial town with great square and cathedral.

Back to Kauai, what is the big deal, unless we are going to the Safeway, we normally take the bypass road which has little traffic.

Hi Iceeu2,
We've been staying in condos or rental home lately. The kids are older now and condos have more room and cut down food cost. I scored 2 nights at the Hawaii Prince this year. But it was ok. Boy, I miss those Priceline prices a few years ago. Even the Kauai Marriott has $165 winning price now. I used to get it for $125.

Too think people once complained about the dark...

Kaui sure aint what it used to be.......

At this point why bother! Go to your own Walmart and Cosco and hang at your local traffic jam with big city lights.........just aint worth the airfare.......never mind the price of anything by the gallon - milk, gas, Baccardi 151........sigh.....
