Amtrak luggage question?
We were planning to take the Metroliner Amtrak from NY to DC--but they say you cannot check luggage--must go overhead (like the airlines). So, do we really need to take smaller luggage? Will be there 9 days, so planned to take the pretty large size (there are 4 of us). Anyone had this problem??

Yeah, Metroliners too have ample space at either end -- or even overhead. It's a hassle to lug your stuff, but everybody does. At the ends of some of the cars, there are big spaces where a seat has been removed; if you can cozy up to a redcap with your dilemma, or have someone in your party "run" cars for you to hold the space, that's a good option too. Speaking from experience: (a) tip a redcap generously, it will be worth it for getting a prime spot; (b) rather than wait upstairs with the hoi polloi, a big enough tip might get you a ride down in the elevator before they announce boarding, for your pick of seats and storage.

Overhead on Amtrak isn't exactly the same as on planes. The storage is open, wire shelves and they can hold more, and much larger items than the overhead bins in airplanes.
That said, I have to wonder why a 9-day trip requires huge suitcases. Plenty of people manage long trips with just carry-ons. What do you put in those huge suitcases, anyways?

Thanks for insider information. I feel better about the trip now. Joanne--9 socks, 9 underwear, 5 pants, 9 sweaters/tops, 2-3 shoes/boots, pj's, swim suit/cover up, dress outfit, belts, etc....plus need a little space for souvenirs to bring home. Can't imagine doing laundry in NYC!!

Have a great trip, jerry.
Thanks for explaining your luggage. Wow, I don't even OWN that many of some things! Five pair of pants, plus the one you're wearing?! I only packed one extra pair for my 3-week trip to London! I never travel with more than 2 or 3 of anything. It's not that much trouble to wash a few things out en route -- I just throw things in the bottom of the shower while I shower, give them an extra rinse, and next day they're ready to go again. Sure, they don't get 100 percent clean, but for a couple of wearings it's fine. I guess each of us has to choose between the hassles of schlepping vs washing.
