All This Talk About San Francisco

has me thinking that I might want to go back there this year. We have tickets to fly to Mexico in August, easily changed to San Francisco.
Questions:
Is August the worst time to go? (as a tourist, lived there but can't remember weather issues) .I have some hotel sites, there are a few that sound great. Has anyone seen the NYTimes Travel section article about SF? They mention a hotel called the Adagio?
Anyone want to give me some advice? , it has been too many years since I have lived in SF.
Thanks~Scarlett

It's unusually cold in August, Mark Twain once said something like: The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco. I was there in July a couple years ago and at night, it was the coldest major city in the US including Anchorage, AK and Bismark, ND. It's not that bad, but if you expect nice weather, you might want to wait for Oct.

Cold in August might not be a bad thing, coming from hot and humid NYC~

Thank you Loki!

June and July can be cold (fog) but August usually isn't so bad. Ms. Scarlett, if you get to SF I surely hope that you and I can meet for a drink! (by the way, that Twaine "quote" is frequently credited to him but he never did say it)

I think it's pretty much hit and miss as far as summer fog is concerned. I went up to SF yesterday and the weather was glorious - sunny and warm, great views. Other times it can be socked in with fog all day long. Either way though, over several days you will more than likely get a mix of sun and fog.

Honey, I will definitely be visiting SF sometime this year and will make a point of having a visit with you!
In the meantime, if you would like to email me? [email protected]

Scarlett~I agree with the hit or miss comments on the weather in August. I think it also depends on what part of the city you are in. It can get pretty cold but I would not say it's a constant threat. I'll check out the
Times article and get back to you. I haven't heard of the Adagio. Come..it's bond to be a break from hot and humid!

Pam,
I think it would just be a lovely break all around!
There is so much that I remember and so many things that I have forgotten, I lived there for a year a long time ago.
My Yankee husband who has lived all over the world, hasn't been to California yet!! So I must bring him to San Francisco!

Scarlett,
The Adagio is the former Shannon Court Hotel, recently refurbished and re-named. I don't have any further info on it, but the location is Geary near Jones - close to Union Square but not right on it - good bus connections, walking distance to department stores and Chinatown, lots of restaurants close by.

Sarlett~It is on Geary between Jones and Taylor. I did look at it on line and it looks quite nice. The joie de vive hotel group(of which this is one) ranks it a "five sun" which seems to equate with amenities and price.

Scarlett~the cable car line is on Powell
off Geary. It will be within easy walking distance from the Adagio.
