All expense paid trip anywhere in the US-where should we go

Hi everyone,

After 20 years with his company, my husband has received a 1 week trip all expense paid trip to anywhere in the US. We are Southern Califonians in our mid-50's. We love New York City but already have a trip planned in October so that is out. We have also visited Boston, New Orleans, Maui and Hawaii in recent years. We would like to visit an area we haven't already been to. A few places that come to mind are Washington, DC, Key West, Chicago, and Kauai. What do you think? Do you have any other suggestions? Thanks in advance for your help.

I would use the gift trip for NY as it is the most expensive and pay your own way to another spot that is less expensive. After 20 years, he deserves it.

don't kniw what your likes/dislikes are, but there's always Vegas, or Memphis!

Key West is always nice, but not sure there's enough to do to fill 1 week.

Fall foliage in New England, particularly in VT and ME is one thing that I would highly recommend that wasn't on your list. A lot of good eats - cheese, chocolate, seafood as well as game and stunning scenery. But with a NYC trip planned in October, it could coincide with the best time for a fall foliage trip.

Can you go ANYTIME during the year?

Do you have any particular interests?

Is the sky really the limit?

For example, could you go to the Kentucky Derby or some event??

An Alaskan cruise?

Some fantastic resort?

How about an "National Parks of the West" train tour - americanorientexpress.com or a luxury Alaskan cruise on Regent Seven Seas, an all suite cruise ship?

What time of year? A Colorado ski trip, or summer spa vacation in Aspen?

There was a PBS special on yesterday about the American West train tour. It looks beautiful.

You are lucky ducks!

Can you go to Alaska?

How about Mackinac Island in the summer, staying at the Grand Hotel?

I also like the idea of Fall Foliage in New England.

Or perhaps Bar Harbor/Mt Desert Island in Maine in the summer?

If you prefer a city, Chicago. Otherwise I'd probably vote for Key West or a Charleston/Savannah trip.

We loved Kauai; that would be my pick. Also really enjoyed Washington D.C.

I like all the places you mention, though Key West is my least favorite (because I remember the place when it was unspoiled by over-development).

Of places you don't mention, I suggest Charleston, Savannah, and Sea Island.

If you aren't limited to the continental U.S., I agree that Alaska is the place to go.

If you want or need to stay in the continental U.S., then I'd recommend Chicago. This is the only American city I have visited where I found more than enough to do for an entire week.

Our friends all rave about Alaska.
My husband raves about Mackinac Island. I think I'd pick a trip I wouldn't normally think of paying for myself.

Definitely not Key West.

Alaska was the first thing that came to my mind, too.

Washington DC., in a nice close in hotel, with tours and all the dining opportunities would be an excellent choice.

Definitely NOT Key West.
