Albany, NY to Myrtle Beach, SC - Avoiding Wash. DC

I need to travel from Albany, NY to Myrtle Beach, SC. I've done this in the past. I usually take 87 south to I-95 south. I don't mind the traffic or tolls through New Jersey, however, I HATE the Washington, DC traffic.

Any suggestions on a different route to avoid DC?

Also, on the way back North it will be a Saturday. Will traffic be an issue then?

Thanks.

Go whatever south to NYC area, head across PA on the interstate (is it 78?) to I81 to I77 to Charlotte. From Charlotte \
Beach directions--this takes about 3.5 hours. The roads are all dual lane.

Highway 74 to Monroe. Take

Highway 601 south to Pageland and Rte 151. Speed enforced south of Monroe. Take

Highway 151 toward Darlington. After passing the speedway watch for

Highway 52 to the right. Take

Highway 52 to I95 NORTH (yes!). Entrance is a left turn under the interstate.

Take I95 NORTH to 3rd exit--Highway 321 (marked for Myrtle Beach)

Take Highway 321 for about 10 miles. Turn LEFT on

Highway 301 (376?)--first major intersection. Just stay straight--It becomes Highway 50l into MB.

From NYC to Charlotte is about 11 hours. From Charlotte to MB is about 3.5. Maybe you can gauge from this if it is worth your while to go that far west to avoid 95.

When we travel from Montreal to NC, we take the I88 from Albany to Binghampton, then I81 all throught Pennsylvania to I70 to Frederick MD. From Frederick you can take the 15 to Leesburg and Warrenton, VA ( a pleasant ride through Virginia). From Warrenton we take the 17 and join the I95 at exit 133. Along this route there is time for sightseening, Antietam battlefield, Harpers Ferry, etc.

Once I got off the I81 in Carlisle PA, took the back roads into Gettysburg, and waited out the DC traffic sightseening. After 7PM, from Frederick the I270 to I495 to Manassas has always worked fine for us.

Saturday traffic has never beeen a problem.
