Alaskan cruise excursions

I'm going on an Alaska cruise next week travelling with a group of 13 people (which includes two toddlers age 2) and wanted to book a few excursions in advance. We're porting at Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, and Victoria, BC. Anyone have any insight into "must see" excursions or any excursions "not worth our time?" Also- if there are any particular companies you used for the excursions that you'd recommend that'd be great too. We were thinking of doing dog sledding in Juneau (though I'm not sure if a 2 year old is allowed on that) and maybe the White Pass Train in Skagway. Any advice and insight is appreciated. Thanks!!

Go to the cruise forum here, as there are many threads about Alaska shore excursions.

Or to the Alaska board at Cruise Critic - http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=55 where options are parsed like the Talmud.

Here you find first-hand experiences how we organized our excursions in these ports:

You will see that we did most by ourselves, renting cars, saving $$$$$$ and seeing thrice as much as our fellow cruise passengers who went on those grossly overpriced excursions.

Skagway was a highligt of our trip - but only because we avoided the White Pass train and did it on our own.

traveller1959, can't thank you enough for that fabulous trip report. We reserved a car in Skagway and will figure out more details before we leave in 3 weeks.
I see we have quite similar sensibilities: we will be staying at McKinley Creek Cabins too! I'm very glad you liked them. Months ago, we bought our shuttle bus tickets. We did buy only out to Eielson which I think is the right call.
Danke!
