Jump to last reply

We (self ,wife and 14 yr old daughter)started planning this trip from Jan and with the help of forum members , trip reports was able to piece together an itinerary . Will post reviews of all the accommodation and activities separately.
A special thanks to all who helped out and responded to my queries.
We left Bangkok on 9th by Asiana airlines with a layover at Seoul and reached Seattle on 9th at 12 noon. Stayed the night at Seattle at courtyard south centre.

10th&11th YAKUTAT- flew Alaska airlines from seattle to Yakutat via Juneau. Got a glimpse of the Mendenhall glacier at the Juneau airport. From Juneau to Yakutat got a good view of the glacier bay national park on the flight.
Bob of Economy auto rental was there to meet us and after finishing all formalities drove over to the log cabin of Mark( Yakutat charter company). It is a nice 2 room place with all facilities. Since Mark was out fishing went on the 32 mile road. Stopped at the Situk river where a number of people were fishing for sock eye salmon. We were told that there were some bears in the area and to try and visit in the evening. Drove to the end of the 32 mile road where the dangerous river flows and saw some big icebergs. It is a non paved road and takes a while but could not make it to hurricane lake. Later we went to the beach and got wonderful views of the St Ellias and Wrangell range. In the evening Mark drove us to the Situk river and got to see the sow and her cub catching salmon. We had not planned on a bear viewing trip hence this was nice experience. Saw some bald eagles at close quarters.
Next day we went with mark in his fishing boat to see the Hubbard glacier. It is a 2 hour boat ride and the we had to cut through a lot of ice floating around the last 6 miles till we reached the face of Hubbard. Spent a good 2 hours watching spectacular calving and the swell after that in the water. We managed to see an orca which is very rare at this time of the year.
We started our trip on a high and Mark does a wonderful job to make it memorable.
We took the evening flight to Juneau.

12th- stayed at the Juneau Hotel for 2 nights. Nice rooms and a decent location in down town. Went with Adventure bound on the Tracy arm cruise. It is a very long day and the ride is ok but the area around South Sawyer glacier had some stunning icebergs. The captain kept the boat for an hour as we had incredible calving continuously. Another highlight of our trip. In the evening visited the Menden hall glacier and walked the trails for a while.

13th&14th at gustavus- took the Alaska marine highway to Gustavs. Comfortable 4.5 hr ride.. We stayed at the Annie Mae lodge who were there to meet us at the dock to pick up our luggage as we were going for noon whale watching trip with TAZ. We saw a number of humpbacks up close and managed to see a breaching. The whales are amazing to see and Tod gives a lot of personalized attention.
Next day we went on the Glacier bay cruise. It was overcast and very cold. It is a nice trip with the ranger service but was an average day for us.
Took the evening flight to Anchorage. On arrival picked up the rental car from hertz and drove to our B&B Alaska frontier garden. A comfortable place for the night and Rita is a wonderful hostess.

15th,16th 17th-Denali-left anchorage in the morning. Weather was fine and got some good view of McKinley. Drove to the park entrance and did 15 mile drive to savage river. Got a feel of the park and left for our B&B Aspen Haus at Healy. Fantastic Cabins in the woods and the owners are terrific to interact with. Next morning we were booked for 7.15 shuttle to wonder lake. It was a cold rainy day but the shuttle trip along with our drivers spotting ability made it a memorable day. We saw bears, mousse, fox, wolf chasing caribou near Toklat river. Left the next morning for anchorage via Talkeetna. It was a long drive and reached our hotel Dimond centre in the evening.
18th-matanuska glacier-did the day trip from anchorage and went for the 3hr ice fall trek with mica guides. The guide was fantastic and the trek was an enjoyable one.

19th-drove from anchorage to seward and went for the 7hr kenai fjord tour with major marine. Saw orcas and Dall porpoises, which was another high light. Stayed at the camai house b&b and went to the exit glacier in the evening.

20th-left for Girdwood to take the PWS cruise with major marine. Stayed at Hidden creek b&b and went for dinner to 7 glaciers restaurant with friends staying at Alyeska resort.

21st –left for anchorage to take the flight to seattle

We used the NL discount coupons and were able to save a fair bit. All the B&B were outstanding the owners make it a pleasant stay with some fine breakfast and sharing their local knowledge.
It was hectic but I am glad I visited and look forward to coming back soon. It was nice to have sunny weather in most places and this was a bonus.
