I really like MILEPOST, but my second choice would be Lonely Planet Guide to Alaska.

Just a suggestion but you might read the Anchorage Daily News at www.adn.com. See what's in the news, coming events, etc. I like gardening so I went on a local neighborhood garden tour last summer. It was a great opportunity to talk to locals and visit their backyards. If you have a particular hobby or interest, maybe there is a club meeting or event you could attend. Talk to your friends. It's surprising how many people used to live in AK or have relatives who do. My optician ties flies for a fishing lodge on the Kenai. My dentist used to go fishing whenever he flew into Elmendorf AFB.

Hardly a guidebook and now over 20 years old, but find John McPhee's "Coming into the Country" at the library, so that you can get some idea of the human face of the place. Wonderful book.

Fodors, Frommers, Milepost, and Bells represent the best in travel guides. But, you can get vacation planners from the ATIA, any CVB, and the Companion guides from Myalaskavacation.com

Just a few suggestions.

DON'T buy Let's Go Alaska. Only one quarter of the book is about Alaska. A rip off.

I have poured over all the guidebooks and decided to buy Frommer's. The information and honest tips were much more thorough for the Alaska book.
