Alabama in June

We are contemplating a golf trip to Alabama the first two weeks in June. Will the weather be unbearable?

Given that you are from Canada, maybe (no sarcasm intended).

It will not be as bad as later in the summer (don't even think of going in August and probably not in July) but it can still be hot and humid. Temperatures will be slightly higher the farther south you go.

For example, here are data for Mobile (on the coast) and Huntsville (in the far north) for May 31 (I could not figure out how to pull up June data):

Average high / average low / record high / record low

Mobile 87 / 67 / 100 / 46

Huntsville 83 / 62 / 98 / 43

Also, don't be surprised if it rains briefly almost every afternoon.

To elaborate a little -

If you plan to golf in the morning and then do other things in the afternoon (tour museums & historic sites, shop, swim/lounge by the pool or beach) you might find the weather agreeable. You might not be as comfortable golfing in the afternoon, however (and even by noon it might be too hot for you). That would be more true if you plan to walk the courses rather than use a golf cart.

As you probably know, it is not the heat per se, but the combination of heat and humidity, that can make things uncomfortable (or even fatal). There is a heat index calculator (in C as well as F) at http://www.crh.noaa.gov/jkl/?n=heat_index_calculator (scroll down the page for a handy chart).

As an example, 30C (86F) and 30% humidity feels like 29C (84F) - and it is highly unlikely the humidity will be at 30% in June! At 50% humidity 30C still feels like 31C, but at 70% (this is much more likely to be the case during your visit) 30C feels like 35C (95F), and at 80% humidity 30C feels like 38C (100F).

If it is hotter and more humid than normal, you might find yourself wishing you were back home (or at least not on a golfing vacation). For historical weather data, got to http://www.wunderground.com/history/ and enter a destination and date. You can get daily, weekly, and monthly data on temperature, humidity, and precipitation.

Whatever you do, be sure to wear lots of sunscreen (even in the morning) and stay hydrated.

Although I live in New England now, I grew up in NW Florida (weather like south Alabama) and my family is still there, one of my siblings has lived three different places in Alabama, and I have relatives in other Southern states - so I am not just speaking theoretically. There is a reason (other than the pretty azaleas) that Augusta hosts the Masters in April rather than June or August!

All things being equal, I would recommend an Alabama golfing vacation for April/May or October rather than June, but June is better than July/August/September.

Book early tee times. You won't want to be on the courses in the afternoon.

I should have said that potential discomfort from golfing in the afternoon instead of the morning will be EVEN more true if walking rather than using a cart!

Yes, it will be very hot compared to Canada, and very rainy, but overall good weather.

So, how is the trip going? I was in NW Florida last week and would not have wanted to be out on the golf course - very humid!
