Hi All,
Im stuck with where to stay for a 6 or 7 night Xmas vacation to New Orleans. We are 5 people and generally like to stay in an airbnb when we travel. One of ther reasons is we seem to get more for the money since in a hotel we need to take 2 rooms. We really like a place that we can enjoy coming back to at the end of the day and are not into big hotels. The reason Im stuck is because of all I have been reading on these forums as far as safety. General consensus being to stay in the french quarter to be safe and it doens't look like they rent airbnbs in the french quarter. We don't like a lot of action or cramped quarters and honestly it sounded like we would like the marigny or another cute neighborhood but I also want to be free to walk around and not worry on vacation. I am open to consider either a smaller hotel with some charm in the french quarter or an Airbnb outside in another cute neighborhood as long as its relatively safe. I would love suggestions.

We will not have a car, but dont mind inexpensive ubers or taxis.

We used Airbnb in New Orleans. I do not recall the specifics of the place on the Airbnb site, but it was within walking distance of Commander's Palace, and even closer to the bus on Magazine that would take us to the edge of the French Quarter. I wrote a trip report; click on my name to find it. And as a group of five, I do not think that safety is much of an issue.

I think one of the main issues with using AirBnB in New Orleans is that you don't find out the exact address ahead of time and neighborhoods can change block to block. So that can make it difficult to determine if you have a good spot or not. That just means you have to do more homework to make sure it is in a good area.

There are a lot of nice, small hotels in the FQ to choose from if you want to go that route - and most of the FQ isn't busy like Bourbon Street, so being in the FQ doesn't mean that you have to be right in the middle of all the partying.

My friends stayed in an Airbnb for JazzFest this year. Their daughter went to Tulane so they’ve been in NO many times. they lioed the Airbnb they stayed in and would stay there again. I can find out the reference no. If you’re interested

My daughter and I booked an Air BnB for November. By reading the reviews and choosing carefully, we are confident that our safety is moostly secure. We'll take Uber or Lyft in the evenings if we feel we need to.

You seem fixated on airbnb. It is NOT the only option.

Check vrbo.com, its parent company homeaway, and flipkey (which is TripAdvisor's vacation rental site).

lasagna, the place is called "Alfred Factor's Row" (you can google it). She said that it is on the streetcar line, so if noise is a factor, look for a unit that does not face the street.

As already mentioned, a group of 5 doesn't have much of a safety issue. Unless you decide to wander way way way off the beaten path.

Marigny would be fine. If you can find something on the west end near the French Quarter you will be happier as you can walk to more stuff.

Depending where you are staying in NO, short term vacation rentals are illegal in the French Quarter.

Please use a hotel.

Would any of you like to have a hotel, 24/7, where you live, in your residential neighborhood?

You can't trust the location maps on rental sites. Many properties are not exactly where the arrow points. If you write the owner and ask, some people will offer the nearest intersection or tell you whether the map arrow is precise.

I have stayed on the outskirts of the French Quarter but never without a car. Certain streets within the French Quarter would not be fun for renting an apartment unless you like a lot of crazy noise at night.

Nobody has suggested getting a short term rental in the FQ. In fact, the OP mentioned there aren't any available. Suggestions have either been to look at smaller hotels in the FQ or look for a short term rental in another neighborhood.
