We seek the lowest cost for air from the NY/Phila area to Alaska. Amazing that flying (thinking Southwest) from Seattle then connecting to Alaska Air costs more than the direct flight out of Philadelphia to Alaska. Newark was $80 more. There must be some wisdom among the Fodorites on how to do better. We'd appreciate any thoughts.

You cannot book on that site but you can go to the airlines using those flight numbers and book.
We fly from PHL to Alaska 2 times a year. It is cheaper to fly from Philly to ANC vs SEA to ANC. I check prices via Orbitz for a defined amount of days during 30 day period. Travelocity compares all airports with 100 miles so for me it includes Baltimore, Washington and Newark. PHL usually comes in with the best prices.
I don't find this unusual at all. Non-stops are often the cheapest option.
Thanks folks. I feel the wisdom from many makes for better planning and judgment call.
There can be savings with a cheap round trip Seattle, then adding a one way Alaska Airlines Sea/Anc. It's all about comparing.
If you are thinking about flying Southwest, RT from PHL-SEA, Southwest has announced a big sale for travel in spring, summer, and fall. http://tinyurl.com/o9l59c
