I wouldn't have thought that either NY or Chicago would be the best place to 'top off' a visit to the Caribbean !!
( No offence intended ! ). We've been to NY 3 times & love it ( be prepared for it to be 'slightly' different to the Caribbean though ! ). Never been to Chicago but would like to go...... Been to the Caribbean too - sigh....
I've visited Chicago ten times and enjoyed every visit; it's one of my favorite cities in the U.S. However, NO CITY in the U.S. can top New York as a place to go. To me, there's no question that New York would be my choice.
But, as already noted, either city will be a MAJOR change from a visit to the Caribbean! Be prepared for culture shock!!
Considering the hot weather, neither city is an ideal vacation spot in August. (But come to think of it, neither is the Caribbean!) And, I don't mean this to be a sarcastic response.
How much of a stop-over do you get? A few hours, or even 24 hrs., will not allow you much sightseeing, once you figure in the time in and out of airport. On that basis, I'd give Chicago a slight edge because getting in and out of O'Hare is slightly easier than any of the NYC airports.
Also, on the basis of weather, Chicago has a slight edge because it has already begun to cool down a bit, and August can be very pretty there. However, all you need is a cold front coming in with severe thunderstorms and the air traffic can be really messed up. NYC may still be a bit warm and can also suffer from severe weather, but the storms are not usually anywhere near as severe.
Culturally, if you've never been to NYC, I'd say you really need to do that. But if you have been to NY, then by all means, "do" Chicago -- it's a marvelous city with plenty to do and in many ways more typically American than New York, which is so diverse and cosmopolitan that it is its own island not only geographically but culturally.
