Affordable hotel in NYC with a GYM

We'll be there a couple weeks before my husband has a big marathon (May), so this time we definitely need the hotel to include a gym. We liked the Westin Times Square last visit, but you have to pay daily to use the gym. Anyone know of a hotel in the theater district or Greenwich Village that is around $200/night, has a gym, and i snot far from the subway? Or a site that let's you "plug in" such a specific request? THANKS You have been so helpful whenever we post!

I do not know of any good hotel rates, but if your husband is training for a May marathon he should get a great run in Central Park. It is a glorious place to get in a training run! (6.2 miles around the inner roadway)

You got the Westin for $200/night??? I can't imagine that.

I agree, about running in Central Park but there are also other outdoor greenways for running. $200/night in May at any 3* or more hotel will be a challenge unless you find a special on travelzoo.com.

Hotwire is another idea. You select a hotel based on stars, amenities (you'll see a fitness center icon of a person holding barbells) and location. Betterbidding.com has a list that would help you identify the hotel.

The other idea is to bid for a 4* hotel on Priceline. The most common wins in midtown west (theater district) are either of the Hiltons, the Sheraton or the Westin. (at a PL rate you can afford to pay for the gym if necessary).

I found this list of hotels that have fitness centers.

I'm sure there are other lists too. You'll see most if not all of the Affinia hotels have them and are generally very good value but they're not located in either of the areas you mention. (There are very few hotels in the village. The only "proper" hotel is the Washington Square and it doesn't have a gym).

2 hotels on that list that are in the theater district and are considered decent budget hotels are the Novotel and the Belvedere. The Shoreham and the Mansfield are sometimes on travelzoo.com with specials.

The Hudson is a Hotwire hotel at the south end of Central Park. While rooms are painfully small, it's a nice hotel with a gym and a good location for running in the park.

Just stayed at the Mariott Residence Inn this past Friday. The rooms are suites with full kitchen. Beautiful hotel and has a gym. Includes breakfast. Rate was $209 a night. Located on Sixth Avenue and 39th Street so you are a few minute walk from subway and attractions. Highly recommend. Good luck.

Just so you know - for random dates in May this hotel is showing rates from $339 to $399 plus tax. (You'll never get lowest season rates in May.)

Gyms in hotels in NYC are usually an afterthought because the hotels can't make any money on them. They usually have something lame in a closet like a treadmill and one weight machine.

However, most have memberships to New York Athletic Clubs or the like which are outstanding facilities.

Also, if you home gym is a member of a program that has reciprocal terms (there is a name for this association) you can use that.

My point is that I wouldn't stress about the gym. For your price range, you will not find much.

Also, you will not find any free gyms in Manhattan.

If you go into any one of the numerous New York Sports Clubs and take a tour, you are eligible for a free two week trial membership.

The Embassy Suites in Battery Park City is in a not-so-great location, but offers access (I think for free) to the New York Sports Club where I belong.

I think in order to get a trial membership, you have to be able to show you're a resident of NYC.

I stayed at the Mansfield in April. Besides having a gym, being affordable, and having a buffet breakfast (not sure if that's every day or just on weekends), the NY Sports Club is right across the street if you already have a membership.

The Washington Square hotel (on Washington Square!) has a small gym. It's nothing special and it's always too hot in there, but at least it offers some machines and weights. I think this retro art deco hotel is one of the best kept secrets in NY (why am I giving it away?!) Good luck in the marathon.
