Additional Girls New York Weekend

A couple of girlfriends and I are going to NYC for a weekend - could you please comment on:

1) Space museum - cool or missable?
2) Where can we find a good afternoon's shopping in "cute" little shops - i.e. antiquing, home decor, paper shops, etc? Any other "girlie" shops that shouldn't be missed?
3) We will be staying at the Embassy Suites near WTC - what is the best way to get to/from LGA or JFK - cab?
4) Any other non-missable things (other than the usual tourist sites, plays, etc.) that we shouldn't miss? (We are going in April.)

Thanks so much!

Since you are in the area, a must would be Century 21, one of the great discount stores in the city and they have everything. The basement is home goods and great prices on designer stuff. Century 21 is right across the street from Ground Zero.

Heading uptown, you might wander through Soho, lots of little shops there, and for good homey kind of stores go to Broadway from 22nd St to 14th St, lots of stores in that area including ABC Carpet, which is one of the nicer home stores here, and carries everything. There are also some upscale thrift stores in the area as well, and Daffy's on 5th and 18 and then walk over to 6th and 18th to Bed Bath and Beyond, Filene's and TJ Maxx

For upscale shopping do Madison Ave from the 50's up. I found this great little store on Madison and 69, for home furnishings, expensive but beautiful home decour.

Don't know the Space Museum you are asking about, we don't have one here, you may be thinking of the Hayden Planetarium and the Museum of Natural History. Yes that is one of the best in the city and worth you time. Some great exhibits and IMAX theatre.

The weather is starting to warm up a bit except for tomorrow and we are gettin another 5 inches of snow, but it is warming up and the snow will be gone overnight. Interesting to see the snow and spring flowers at the same time.

A cab is the fastest way into the city from LGA, or you can take the Carey Bus which stops very close to your hotel.

I would suggest getting a New York Magazine so you know what is new in the city and what exhibits you might want to see. There are some wonderful special events at the Met Museum all the time. We just saw the DiVinci last week and it was wonderful. (it has closed by the way) The Manet and Valesquez (and please pardon the spelling) will run I understand through the end of April.

Have a great time while you are here and enjoy the city.

If you are looking for a paper shop, try Kate's Paperie in Soho at 561 Broadway (between Prince Street and Spring Street) (212) 941-9816. Store Hours are Monday-Friday 10:00-7:30, Saturday 10:00-7:00, Sunday 11:00-7:00. For a preview check out their website: http://www.katespaperie.com

There are several great home decor shops and I'm sure you'll get a lot of suggestions here. A few of my favorite's are: Gracious Home at 70th street & 3rd Ave, and ABC Carpet & Home (can be expensive, but it's a very interesting store) at Broadway and E. 19th Street. Here is their website if you want more info: http://www.abchome.com/default.htm

I don't know if you have a Crate & Barrel store near you but the one at 650 Madison (near 60th street) is fabulous.

As far as antiquing, you might want to consider an early morning at the Chelsea flea market and the nearby 2-story garage with more "goodies". The markets are open 7 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. The garage is on West 26th Street, between Sixth and Seventh avenues; the parking lots with vendors are on Sixth Avenue between West 25th and 26th streets and Sixth Avenue between West 24th and 25th streets. Admission to the garage is free; admission to the lot on Sixth Avenue between 25th and 26th streets is $1.

The Hayden Planetarium and the Museum of Natural History are wonderful. If you have time, plan on spending the good part of the day there - lots to see!

If you are into antiques & home decor, you might want to stop in at Sotheby's or Christies auction houses. You can "preview" the upcoming auctions (even if you have no intention of attending the event) Great way to see some wonderful pieces that you don't come across everyday. (There is also a cafe at Sotheby's.) Check their website to see what will be coming up for auction during your stay.

If you do decide to go to the Planetarium at the Natural History Museum, check out Cafe Lalo on 83rd Street at Amsterdam for a coffee, hot chocolate or snack. It was the cafe in "You've Got Mail" and besides that, is a cute place to relax after checking out the museum. Also, there is a Cafe in ABC Carpet or also in that neighborhood, try City Bakery (18th Street btwn 5th & 6th). On Saturday mornings, there is a farmer's market in Union Square which is really great if the weather is nice. I concur that the Soho area around Kate's is good for stopping in little shops -- be sure to walk onto the side streets and not just down Broadway or West Broadway.

I'm assuming you mean the planetarium at the museum of nat'l history. I guess it's a matter of taste, and I did enjoy bringing my kids there but for an adult visit, I would be more inclined to visit one of the art museums unless you really enjoy planetariums and don't mind lots of kids. I would suggest checking what the exhibits are at the Met, Whitney, Guggenhiem, Moma, etc and see if anything interests you.

For shopping, you already have been given great advice. Kate's is other locaitons besides the soho one. Their website would list the others. Soho is a great area to check out cute little shops, also madison avenue in the 70s and 80s.

Definitely take a cab. It's the easiest and most convenient.

Instead of Crate and Barrell, check out ABC. Unreal.

The Frick is a great museum easily do-able in under 2 hours. Have drinks at a fabulous hotel bar (St. Regis, The Plaza, The Carlyle) or at The Rainbow Room.

Another vote for Century 21.

In case you're thinking of the Intrepid Museum as the space museum, I would forget about it as it is near nothing. Previous suggestions on Soho, Madison Ave, Century 21 (since you're so close)and ABC would be on my list.
