Accommodations near Charleston

I'm looking for relaxation, seafood, low country ambience, and marsh or ocean views near but not right in Charleston. Is there a particular island or town you can recommend? Any specific hotels? Not interested in luxurious accomodations, golf or anything like that.

Folly Beach. We have always done VRBO there but this hotel is an option.

I am looking for the same thing and found that Folly Beach looks laid back and close to Charleston. We are looking at going in November.

I frequent Charleston A LOT and I love it dearly. I also do Folly's Beach, Pawley's Island, Edisto, Kiawah and a few others often. I have to say that you should skip all of them and do Hunting Island if you are looking for relaxation, few people. You can also climb a lighthouse while you're there and take a-maz-ing pictures. There is also a lot of wildlife, marshes, etc. It is a state park and the "wild" of the area has been maintained.

Beaufort is very close to Hunting Island and would be a good place to stay unless you like camping/RVing on the beach. Beaufort is a small town with GREAT food, wonderful history, a great atmosphere and is located right next to HI which is by far one of the best beaches in the state -- in my opinion. Beaufort sits on a river and has great accommodations, shopping, and that gorgeous Spanish Moss. It is a better, more quiet getaway. I prefer it to Charleston when I need to get away from home and crowds.

Beaufort is not that far from Charleston - like an hour and a half or so.
