Accommodations in Newport

Has anyone stayed at the Abigail Stoneman Inn or Cliffside Inn in Newport? If so, would appreciate feedback. Also, what would be the best location in Newport. Thanks.

My husband and I just got back a week or so ago from a long weekend in Newport and we stayed at the Cliffside Inn. (Check out the Rants & Raves section...I posted a review.) We enjoyed the Cliffside Inn very much. We stayed in the Seaview Cottage (Atlantic Suite) and it was very private and quiet. The Inn was about 1/2 block from the Cliff Walk and about a 10 minute drive from downtown and about the same to some of the mansions. We toured The Breakers, Marble House and Rosecliff, took daily drives down Ocean Drive, toured the Museum of Yachting and took a sunset cruise on the schooner America, which I think has moved on to Key West by now. Hope this helps!

To Clarence, I had a very nice conversation with the innkeeper. Can you tell me what you mean by "leaves so much to be desired" and why you think the inn is overpriced. Thanks.

For answer on Viking Hotel:
Go to Rhode Island board and scroll down a little ways for recent reviews on Viking Hotel.

WE just stayed at the Wellington on Thames ST. Had a wonderful bay view and free parking. It was a condo ,fireplace, kitchen . Great walking along Thames and several nice restaurants nearby.

You definately have to stay at The Vanderbilt Hall, off of Thames Street. We stayed there in August and it was wonderful, right in the thick of things, lovely, and charming. It's more of a larger hotel, than a B&B type place - I am not sure if that is what you're looking for? Big , gorgeous rooms, great restaurant and afternoon tea...www.vanderbilthall.com

Ditto on the Francis Malbone. What a lovely place..everything about it. While in Newport eat at Scales and Shells..yummy! Take in some of the mansions..the opulence will astound you.

I have not stayed at those two, I visited but ended up staying at their sister property the Adele Turner Inn (they were running a winter special). All of these 3 inns are fabulous - best in Newport.

I stayed at the Viking and won't do it again. I am from NYC and am used to small rooms, but this was ridiculous. There wasn't a closet or anywhere else to put the suitcase and you could barely walk around the bed. The bathroom was also TINY.

For over $300 a night, we had an incredibly noisy room next to the maid's room. Slamming doors beginning before 7 am.

On the plus side, they have a parking lot and it's walking distance to downtown.
