i am taking my family camping to Acadia National park(7/9-7/14). we are driving from NYC but we will spend two days in Chattam, NY. from Chattam the trip is quite long with to kids. i wonder if anybody could suggest nice places along the way to spend part of the day and one night. i would to stay in a small charming town along the way with good lodging and dinning.

I think Portsmouth New Hampshire might make a nice stop. Its more or less halfway, has some very nice dining, and some things to see. I think parts of Portsmouth are quite charming, although maybe not so "small town" as you specify.
Southern Maine could work as well, someplace like Kennebunkport or Ogunquit. Or maybe the north shore of Massachusetts (Cape Anne, Gloucester, Salem), though these are a little bit out of the way.
Its not what you asked for, but Hampton Beach NH could be fun too. My friends kids love the boardwalk and the games and the beach.
