A very short trip report on Hocking Hills in Southern Ohio

What a wonderful weekend! The hills are full of cabins. Some are remote as was ours. A lovely knotty pine cabin with bedroom in the loft. A hot tub on the front porch that we used Friday night in total darkness (except for a candle) amoung the trees that serounded the cabin.

Saterday, we hiked Old Man's Cave which is beautiful with rocks and waterfalls but it about killed my knees! Getting old is the pits! We came back to our cabin and sinking in that hot tub was the best treat ever! We grilled steak and read, rested and relaxed! Saterday evening found us in the hottub again. You don't have to worry about wearing a bathing suit as there is no one around. Well, we THOUGHT no one around. We came back in the cabin and turned on the porch light and within minutes, we had visitors. Three racoons and one opossom. They were the cutest creatures! Out looking for food so we accomodated them. We would throw food out and when they finished they would all look at us thru the glass doors. Like,"OK, I'd like more please"

A great weekend for anyone that wants to just be alone and relax.

We lived in Central Ohio for years. The Hills was one of our favorite year round destinations. When we get back in that area we always try to at least make a day trip there. That area is one of the best kept secrets or at least it was.

I really do know how to spell Saturday, It must be all that wine we had in the hot-tub!

I would imagine you would need a 4x4 to drive in those hills in the winter with snow and ice.

A little extra tot on the weekend (Saturday) never hurt anyone. We never went to the Hills while the snow was falling. The state is good about keeping the roads clear. Some of the walking trails can get to be a bit of fun if snow or ice is on them. You sound like you are not living in the area.

cd - Where did you stay/rent from ? Actually the Winter time is one of the very best/most scenic times to go. With all the ice, & particularly when the waterfalls freeze. They also have a Winter hike in January that starts @ Old Mans, goes through Cedar Falls & ends @ Ash Cave where they bus you back. Lunch @ Cedar Falls also. (Soup beans, corn bread & such). It is fairly flat & leisurely paced. It is 6 miles if I recall correctly. Glad you enjoyed one of my favorite, 'secret' places. It used to be where we skipped school when I was growing up.

We stayed at the Red Rock Cabins in the cabin 'Woody' If anyone is interested, http://www.redrockcabins.com/
It is two miles to Old Man's Cave. I think next time I would like to try a place on the Lake.
What a great place to play hooky!

We always stay @ the Cedar Falls Inn (or something like that) since they have a restaurant (one of the best in the area). But no hot tubs that I recall. Also, the Grouse Nest just past Ash Cave is pretty good. It was a great place to play hooky & I now share it w/my kids every year on XMas day. If you want the entire park to yourself...that is the day to go.

Love the Hocking Hills, still somewhat of a *best kept secret.*

We too, love being surrounded among the trees. Very cozy and fragrant.

Thanks for posting.
