A Trip to the East Coast

Hi, I am going to New York City next week for 10 days. This is my third time going over there and I am still very excited. I have a girl friend over there and I pretty much went to all the "tourist places". What do you think is the weather over there? I am debating if I would bring warm clothes or not, I usually go there in December and it is COLD!Me and my girl friends are also planning of going down south to Florida and will be taking public transportation. You think stopping by Washington DC is worth it and what other states do you think is interesting to visit on the way to Orlando, Florida? We are also planning of going to Niagra Falls before going south, is one day good enough or probably overnight. Is my itenerary too much to handle? Or do you think we can make it. I will not be spending a lot of time in New York, we wanted to go out of state if we can.

Thank you in advance for all your insight and ideas. Please help!

What do you mean by "public transportation"? Greyhound? Train? Airplane?

Niagara Falls is to the Northwest of NYC, and is like 400 miles away. How are you planning to get there? It's clearly not on the way to Orlando.

As for weather, try www.weather.com for forecast.

Are you spending 10 days in NYC or taking 10 days to get down to Florida? Weather will be in the low 70's/high 60's in NYC. I'm not sure where you are coming from but Niagara Falls is a 7 hr drive from NYC. If you will be going by Niagara Falls to get to NYC, then a day there will be sufficient. Go to the Canadian side because there is nothing to do on the US side but simply see the falls.

If you are taking a bus or train down to Florida, then stop in DC if your route takes you that way. I would recommend 2 nights/3 days to see the major tourist sights (White House, Capitol, monuments, a few Smithsonians etc) Where else you stop depends on what route you are taking to get to Florida. If you can, I would see Charleston and Savannah.

DC is certainly worth a visit, and the nice thing is that most tourist spots are free. If you are a student, or under 30 yr old, you guys might like staying in the hostel ( see hiayh.org ), or if u need to save money, stay in the outskirts of DC and take public transit into town. The Chinatown buses ( ivymedia.com ) are an inexpensive way to get between NY & DC.

good luck.

First off...forget the Niagra Falls idea. Save it for a "Canada'" excursion. But definetely plan a few days in D.C. Great sightseeing, great nightlife. Also, I wouldn't limit yourseves to Orlando. You can have lots of fun in the keys, South Beach etc! Don't forget to let us know how it all turns out!

Well, today in NYC was 80 - with a low of about 68 tonight. Definitely not going to be cold - but you probably want a light jacket or sweater. And naturally as you go south it will be warmer.

Do not reco going to Niagara Falls (need at least one night there - even if you fly) unless this is a deal breaker for you - pretty boring except for the Falls itself.

For DC I think you will need at least 4 days.

Not sure what you mean by public transport to go to FLA. There are buses - or planes. If you mean Amtrak - outside of the Boston/NY/Washington corridor - service is quite limited, quite expensive - and slow/unpleasant. As an alternate you may be able to get a one-waycar rental. Some of the NE agencies start to move cars to FLA this time of year - and you may get a one-way with no drop-off charge.

thanks again for all your great advices, I will keep that in mind. My friends and I have decided not to go to Washington DC at this time because we don't have enough time. Looks like we are going to Niagara even though I prefer Washington DC but majority won. We will only spend a night there and go back to New York and take the Amtrak to Orlando, Fl and stay there for 4 nights and 5 days. We are planning of staying in one of those deluxe hotel inside the Disney World. I think it is too pricey, I was suggesting we just stay outside where it is cheeper. Any suggestions?? Somewhere we can have free shuttle service to the Disney Parks or Universal Parks and near outlet shopping mall. Is it worth buying the park hooper ticket for Disney, we are not really into wild rides, more on sigthseeing and relaxation. Do you think Disney World is better than Universal? I would surely make it a point to visit Washington DC next time. I really appreciate all the help ;0)

You do know that the Amtrak train from NYC to Orlando runs right through DC, don't you? There are a couple of direct trains, but some require a change of trains and a 2 or 3-hour layover in DC; one is even mid-afternoon. Check your luggage at the booth near Gate A and dash to one of the nearby attractions, like the Postal Museum or the Botanical Gardens.

On second thought, why don't you head down to DC while they go to Niagara Falls, then join them in orlando, perhaps even on the same train from DC?

You could just get a jetBlue ticket ($57) from JFK to Buffalo, visit the falls, and then fly ($86) from there to Orlando.

Wow, that's a fabulous airfare -- even less than the train ticket ($96) and saves them a whole day or more or boring train travel.

Wow, Mr. Wonderful, that is wonderful!
Great tip!

Pretty in Pink, it sounds like you will have tons of fun and a wonderful trip. Your friends are very lucky to have you steer them in the right direction. (How old are you and your friends? I'm not sure whether I'm envious of your youthful confidence and enthusiasm, or frightened for your naivete!)

NYC won't be cold, but it will be at the Falls. Bring some layers! Even the evenings in the city will be cool. Especially if you are from somewhere warm!

I think the Park Hopper is "worth it." You can come and go from different parks in the same day that way. For example, if you wanted to go on Magic Kingdom rides in the morning, Epcot for dinner, and back to MGM for laser show at night - you could - and on just one day's ticket. Also, I think they apply to the water parks, too. If anyone in your party is a member of AAA, you could buy the Park Hoppers at a discount before you leave home. And if you don't redeem all the days, save the ticket for another trip; they never expire.

I like Disney better than Universal since I'm not into "thrill" rides. I like the atmosphere and lay-out better at Disney parks.

As far as hotels, you could probably find a great deal at the Holiday Inn Family Suites right now, since they are in the middle of converting themselves into the Nickelodeon Hotel. The room price includes a suite with fridge and micro, king, queen, and pull-out double beds, breakfast buffet, and transportation to Disney parks. But heck, if you can all afford to stay on Disney and split the price - why not!?

Have a blast!

My friends and I is grateful for the vast information everyone has shared! We are in our late 20's we are excited to go to Disney World, we already booked our hotel with the park hopper tickets. We need more help though, suggestions for good, inexpensive($$, casual ambiance restaurants. And finally, a good souvenir shop that won't rip us off. Inside the theme parks are probably expensive huh? I really appreciate all the help.

I just got back from my vacation and Me and my friends had a blast! I did went to Washington DC instead of Niagra and we enjoyed it. We stayed there overnight and we were able to go to almost all the tourist spot. We took the Amtrak to Florida and I didn't like it, I would still prefer flying. We stayed 4 nights and 5 days in Orlando, Fl at Disneyworld. Did not get a chance to go anywhere else but not complaining. Disneyworld is huge! I had a great time the only bad thing that happened to me was my luggage arrived late in NY and late when I got back home. Don't fly UNITED! thanks to all the great advice. till my next trip...

We stayed at the Caribbean Beach Resort in Disney World. I liked all four theme parks, I liked the Fantasmic(night show) in MGM,the Wishes(night show)in Magic Kingdom, the rides in EPCOT and the Kilimanjaro Safari in Animal Kingdom. In Washington DC, I liked the Smithsonian Museums.
