A review of 4 Marriotts in DC
I had the opportunity to stay in four different Marriotts this year so I thought it might be helpful to someone to provide reviews.
Marriott Wardman Park is a big, conference hotel and it feels like one. It is an old building but hasn't retained any charm. It's very quiet and removed from the street. I was upgraded to the concierge level which has a very nice lounge serving continental breakfast and a happy hour snack service with cheese, fruit etc. I heard complaints of dirty rooms from friends but my room was clean and very comfortable. This Marriott is close to the zoo and metro. We (3 women) walked down Connecticut Ave past Dupont Circle to the M St area for dinner. It wasn't a difficult walk and we felt safe the entire time.
My husband and I stayed at the Renaissance Mayflower hotel for a romantic weekend away. The hotel is gorgeous. I would love to attend a wedding reception in their beautiful ballroom. The room itself wasn't huge but it was lovely and comfortable. Request a room away from Connecticut. The street noise carried all the way to the 7th floor. The hotel is walking distance to some very good restaurants and shopping. A metro stop is only a couple of blocks away.
A family trip brought us to the Renaissance Washington DC. Again, no charm but very comfortable and quiet. Lots of seating in the lobby to wait to meet up with other family members. This hotel is in a business area that is very quiet on the weekend. We were able to walk to Corduroy for dinner but there aren't a lot of restaurants around for other meals. Its close to the Mall, blocks from the Portrait Gallery, and the convention center.
The Renaissance M St. hotel has a more modern, funky feel to it so it was perfect for a trip with my teenage daughter. I love the location of this hotel. We could walk to Georgetown or up to Dupont Circle. The area is residential and felt very safe. The walls are a little thin so we could hear the neighbors and their phone ringing.
On my next trip I am going to try the Washington Marriott. It is across the street from the M st hotel so in the same great location. Maybe the walls will be a little more soundproof.

Wow, this is very helpful, thanks Birdie! It is difficult to balance proximity to the Mall and monuments with staying in a more dynamic neighborhood, a dilemma I think you describe very fairly. And I'm going to aim for the Mayflower for our next stay! I remember when it was freshly renovated, but I lived in the city back then so had no need -- or $$, honestly--for a hotel.

Just to add to the thread, we use the JW Downtown and the Marriott Metro Center for business visitors and occasionally after crippling snowstorms for employees (and in DC that's anything more than a couple of inches -- weather wimps).
Both are convenient to Metro and the Mall as well as DT dining -- as well as Chinatown. The JW is closest to the mall and White House. It's a big convention hotel with rooms that are fine but unspectacular. Same goes for the Marriott Metro Center rooms. If prices were equal, I'd take the JW.
But another Marriott property worth considering is the Courtyard in Chinatown/Penn Quarter area. It's newer and built in an old bank building and sits in the heart one of the city's best dining districts. Close to Metro and the mall.
