Hey there!
soo I'm going to NYC this summer, and I'm really excited I've never been there before and I wanna go, I can't wait!
well I was planning on going with a friend, but they backed out on me and even affordable hotels are now a little expensive to me, and so I was thinking maybe an apartment would be cheaper, right?
anyways I can't seem to find websites, good ones that rent out holiday apartments (whether there will be a person hosting me or a private apartment) and I'm thinking about staying longer, seeing how it's cheaper I'll have more money.

anyways my question, is does anyone know any good, reputable sites that rent out apartments? shared or private doesn't matter, seeing how most likely I'll be going alone now.

Most short term apt. rentals in NYC are illegal. Many are scams

I don't know about the shared option (provided you mean sharing with the apt. owner or renter)

If you want specific recommendations, dates and nightly budget in USDs will be needed.

Do a search on this website for NYC apartments and you will see all the threads about short term apt rentals being illegal. You will find them on vrbo or craigslist but I wouldn't take a chance as they might be scams.

There are hotels with shared bathrooms and some get decent reviews. Let us know your budget and exactly when you are visiting.

New York City is an expensive place to visit, pretty much across-the-board. You might want to research other costs, of the activities you'd like to enjoy, before you make a final decision.


(Just one example: US$20 plus fees to ride the elevator to the top of the Empire State Building.)

You might want to consider staying just outside of NYC if you are trying to save some money. New Jersey public transportation is amazing and you could be in NYC in 10 min. Hoboken, NJ is a great place to stay! You don't want to spend a lot of money on a hotel room by yourself... you should put this money towards NYC attractions instead

One reasonable option is staying in a hostel. The Hosteling INternational one has a very good reputation and is only $40 per night for a bed in a dorm room with locker. There are also some B&Bs with shared baths that are reasonable perhaps in the region of $100 per night.

Renting an apt in NYC for less than a month is illegal - and ads you see may be scams or may not. In any case you can be summarily evicted if a neighbor complains about you being in their building illegally.

I highly recommend "The Pod", an inexpensive hotel in the heart of Manhattan. My daughter and I stayed in a 2 bunk room with a hall bath that was extremely clean. I think you can share a room as requested since each bunk had it's own small TV. St. Patrick's Cathedral is a short walk, as is Rockefeller Center and Times Square. There is also a roof terrace with a fabulous view. We got a great deal last summer, $99 a night on their website. We'd stay again!!!

I had the same issue about a month ago! Too many to pick from and some are pricey!! I just booked into radio city apartments and got a 1 bedroom apartment to share with 3 people ( king bed or choice of 2 double beds in bedroom and 1 sofa bed in living room) - they have a kitchenette in them aswell which is a money saver as you dont have to eat out for every single meal. I am going in april 2011 and got the room for $350 inclusive of taxes - they did have cheaper rooms with just 2 queen beds - it might be worth sending an email through and asking for a quote - it is smack bang in the middle of everything aswell so should be able to walk to many places - hope this helps!

I'm sorry everyone, I had no idea it was illegal for short term apartment rentals, I honestly had no clue that was illegal.
well then i guess the next best thing is to look for cheap hotels, i don't really want a hostel, but i'm willing to settle

and I guess I forgot to put a budget, I would say anything more than 2,200 for about 11-14 days would be too much for me, I'm only a student D: a college student haha
so if anyone has some good suggestions on some budget hotels, with a good to decent location, thanks in advance!

I think the Hotel Larchmont downtown would probably be in your range. The inexpensive rooms have shared bath, but it is quite clean and decent, although I last stayed in it a while ago.

When in winter are you going? Rates in Jan and Feb are very low since most people prefer not to deal with the worst of winter weather. but November and December are high season - with throngs of tourists coming for the holidays - and hotel rates are at their highest (anything decent and clean - even with shared bath - would be above your budget - assuming you mean US $).

To others - please don;t quote low season rates to people that are going in high season - the prices are typically at least twice as high - often more. You can say a certain hotel was a bargain. For instance in December a single Pod room with a shared bath is about $180 per night including taxes. The op is traveling alone - so a room with 2 beds makes no sense (this is a hotel - not a hostel and they won;t rent parts of rooms to strangers).

Sorry, that's the Larchmont Hotel, not the Hotel Larchmont, and posted range for a single is 99-165, which should be in the OP's budget. Think relatively well appointed college dorm room, and I recall the bath as being clean and adequate. There was even a robe in the room so you did not have to subject strangers to your pajamas, and the website does mention its existence.

You should know hotel prices fluctuate dramatically depending on dates. From Sept.-Dec. rates are high. Jan-March is much more affordable. If you're willing to share a bathroom there are quite a few places that have private rooms and are affordable. The Park Savoy is a quirky hotel in a very good location that has private bathrooms and is affordable but they only take reservations a few months in advance. Most hotels require you be 21 to check in. Hostels don't. If you want more help, post back with more details on travel dates and budget.

I have found that the least expensive part of a trip to NYC is my airfare and accommodations. As was pointed out, everything is expensive and you'll spend more than you plan.

I would suggest a shorter trip with budget accommodations in a room with at least a fridge.

What do you spend your money on? I can agree that air isn't much, but accommodations in NY always make up a fairly large percentage of the cost of my trip.

Shopping, dining, attractions, shows, transportation to and from the airport, etc.

I only use the subway while I'm there so I spend no money on cabs. I only use priceline for rooms.

I've been looking for a cheaper alternative for our stay in October. We currently have a reservation for the Club Quarters and, with tax, it will be nearly $300 per night. If we could stay more cheaply in Hoboken and it would only take $10 into the city, that sounds like a great idea. Do you have any suggestions on hotels there?

tiger, try the Red Roof Inn on 32nd street. I've stayed there several times. No complaints.
