Here's how we broke up the trip:
Day 1: Arrive Seattle, night on Bainbridge Island

Day 3: Mason Lake with family
Day 4: Drive to Columbia River Gorge - enjoy overlooks and hikes, night at Government Camp

We loved all these locations and were astounded by the natural beauty that was around every corner.

Highlights were:
Seattle
Pike Place Market - Was an overwhelming experience. I didn't realize that there would be produce and flowers in addition to all the fish. We ate lunch here and I had a terrific wrap and my husband had a blackened salmon sandwich and clam chowder--also delicious.
Space Needle - We had a nice clear day and the wait to get in wasn't unbearable (we arrived at 9 a.m. and had not bought advance tickets. This was the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend and we waited for about an hour).
Ye Old Curiosity Shop Stepped in because it was along our way and had a fun time staring up at all the, well, curiosities. Neat!
Freemont Neighborhood and Troll - This was a fun neighborhood to poke around and we got the requisite photo of us picking the troll's nose!
Cafe Flora - My friend just bought a house in this neighborhood and we went to this vegetarian restaurant for dinner. Fried avocado appetizer rocked my world! The entrees were terrific, too and the waitstaff was really friendly.
Columbia River Gorge - Excellent outdoor activities!
Multnomah Falls - Beautiful falls. But jam packed since it was the Monday of Memorial Day. The parking lots were so full people had to wait for spots. The crowds here convinced us to take a less-traveled hike later, which led us to...
Wauna Viewpoint Hike - We were stopped at the Eagle Creek loop and considering the crowds we were glad when a volunteer suggested this less-used path, which we took. We had a nice hike and great views.
Dog Mountain Hike Loved this strenuous hike. The wildflowers blooming near the top were unbelievable and the vistas were outstanding. The wind was chilly but most of the hike was pleasantly cool.
Thanks for the report.
Mt. Hood
Timberline - We rode the magic mile ski lift with a "footsie" pass to walk around on the mountain. It was terrific and we had a fabulous view. It was really really cold! We then went into the lodge since it is a National Historic Landmark. It's a pretty lodge and looks like a fabulous place to stay.
Mirror Lake Hike - Since it was a Tuesday there wasn't a large crowd at this popular and easy hike. We had an outstanding view of Mt. Hood reflected in the small lake and enjoyed the relaxing walk.
Portland
Food Trucks! - Loved walking all around the food trucks and picking from the huge variety for lunch. I had [another] Indian wrap and my husband had Thai food. It was hot and delicious and the portions were huge!
Chinese Garden - FAIL! We walked there from the food trucks only to see that it costs $9.50 per person. We bailed and went to the Historic Rose Test Garden instead (for free).
Historic Rose Test Garden - This garden is beautiful and fragrant. We loved seeing the huge variety of roses. It was amazing. The garden is lovely and the tributes to their "rosarians" is lovely. Cute little rose-themed gift shop, too.
