7 Days on the coast of Maine
We would like some suggestions on an itinerary for a family trip from Portland to Acadia. I plan to drive from NYC while my wife and 3 year old will fly to Portland. Cute, cozy, and comfortable!

when?
Do you want sandy beaches? Going hiking? Biking?
We stayed at the Dunes in Ogunquit in June. Very cute place. Choice of accomodations from motel units to cottages with kitchen facilities. Lots of grass, nice pool. View is partially blocked by huge sand dune. Walking or rowing distance to beach. But Ogunquit is south of Portland.
It's been several years since we stayed at Glenmoor by the Sea in Lincolnville just north of Camden. We stayed in a unit that had separate sleeping area from LR area plus microwave and fridge with table/chairs, own deck. Really nice set up so you can enjoy staying up while child sleeps. Large property with full cottages closer to ocean. Lots of grass, pool.
Per my usual spiel, take a picnic lunch to the top of Mt Battie in Camden (toll road). We carry bag chairs in the car. Spread blanket and toys for child. Bring binoculars and enjoy fantastic view. Overlooks Camden Harbor and you can see sailboats coming along.

I suggest visiting Harpswell Peninsula (Orr's Island, Baileys Island) for beautiful coastal scenery & great seafood at Estes I, II, & III, or the Dolphin Marina. Brunswick & Bath are cute towns/cities to visit.
Do you have accommodations at Acadia? I recommned Inn at Southwest Harbor in Southwest Harbor; it's quieter than Bar Harbor & less touristy. I also recommend Thurston's Lobster Pound in Bernard on MDI for great lobster!
The Camden/Rockland area would make a nice half-way point between Portland and Acadia.

Prime time for foliage actually changes year to year but 2nd week of October is usually a good bet. However, Ilan, you should post your own topic asking for assistance....latching on to someone else's thread is considered "hijacking" and it is very difficult for people to answer two people with two different needs and desires at the same time.

I will say to both of you, however, if you put MAINE in the fodors "Search the forums" box above, you'll get the answers to most of your questions and lots of good advice. You can also search "Acadia" or "Bar Harbor" or "foliage" or "lobster" or "Coastal Maine" etc etc etc

Ilan, I would visit Oqunquit and stay in Kennebunkport at the Breakwater Inn and have dinner at the White Barn Inn. Next stop is Camden and make sure you visit Boothbay Harbor and Portsmouth on your way (on purpose skip Portland as I would make a stop on my way back). Spend three nights in Camden there are many nice B&B's and there is so much to see and do. I stayed at Camden Harbour Inn and was my favorite sleep on my trip. Decided to stay longer because I loved the inn and Camden area. Make sure to dine at Primo in Rockland and sail on one of the windjammers. I would spend one night on Deer Isle at the Pilgrim's inn and than continue to Arcadia. I stayed at the Regency (where Obama stayed), but there are also tons of smaller inn's. Have dinner at Havana and make sure you visit Arcadia. I would spend 3 nights in Arcadia. Drive back to Portland via Bangor and Augusta and spend a night or two in Portland at the Portland Harbor Hotel. Have dinner at Forestreet. This would be my ideal trip to Maine in the foliage season.
