Randy, check out betterbidding.com
They may have info or be able to help you identify the hotel.
I'm sure its tempting for $59 and its a 2*..
There was a major dump next to Hamura Saimin's in Lihue that was $79 a night and wife and I laughed since the price we paid for the 5* Grand Hyatt Kauai worked out to $78 a night with sweeping ocean views.
If you can take icceu2 advice on better bidding to see if you can identify the motel.
Great deals on expedia.com.
Aloha
Back with ya...It's likely the Kauai Sands or Aloha Beach Resort. Check tripadvisor or other sites for some reviews on either.
I would chance the $122 4*...it's probably the Hilton or maybe even the Marriott.
I wish I could remember the name, but there is a remodeled little hotel in Kapaa that I would definitely stay in....I'll find the name of it and get back to you.
not to hijack.....but how the dickens did you get the Grand Hyatt for $78/night???? I could do that in a heart beat!
duh.......I couldn't get that rate at the Hyatt for $78 in a heart beat, but I could certainly STAY at the Hyatt for $78 in a heart beat. See.....just thinking about Kauai gets me all flustered
ksucat: I am curious about your Hyatt deal, too. You've mentioned it a few times. I remember you said it was a package, but how did you break the cost down to arrive at $78?
I wouldn't mind scoring such a deal for my next trip!
<<<I wouldn't mind scoring such a deal for my next trip!>>>
I wouldn't mind scoring such a deal and then planning a trip, whether I had one planned before that or not LOL!
It was a package deal with expedia with the flight/hotel/car and it worked out less than $78 a night if you factor in that they gave us free breakfast coupons that were up to $56 a day times 7..

Flight prices were through the roof in Sept...cars was around $300+
We really loved the Grand Hyatt and the grounds and pools are exquisite.
icee..we did go to Red Salt at the Koa Kea resort and poked our head into the Marriott property Waikola (sp) next door since we have a free week and thinking of using it there.
I saw somewhere that the Sheraton in Poipu had deals for around $100+ per night..you might want to check that out Randy.
The Aloha spirit is so alive and well in Kauai vs. the other islands..
Can't wait to go back..laugh my ass off thinking that you all call it a 'hell hole'..
I see what you did! You borrowed from the three and carried the one! I am entering Marriott's free giveaway deals that are going on right now. If I win the one to Kauai, I will just force myself to take it and like it!!!!!!
Randy, there are so many great places...I'm not sure I would take a $59 room on Hotwire. The hotel I was thinking of in Kapaa is Coral Reef. Looks like some pretty high rates, but they do have e rates.
Have fun.
I would be very wary of any 2* hotel on Hotwire.
iceeu2, the only 2* listed on better bidding is the Kauai
Sands, the Aloha Beach Resort is listed as 2-1/2*.
Randy, never stayed at Kauai Sands but property is on the ocean beside the Coconut Marketplace. Handy location east side. On beach walks went past it dozens of time, visited relatives who stayed there every year and although older basic units, was always spotless! Front pool is close to beach, smaller pool in back area.
concur with sf on 2* on Hotwire..
I'm a 4-5* guy but I like the 2* prices..
Keep us posted Randy!
Why not name your own price and bid for a better hotel on Priceline? I wouldn't use hotwire for a hotel over priceline. Check winning bids on biddingfortravel.com before you bid.

Aloha!
Randy........where are you?????? I just read on bft where someone got the Marriott Kauai(Lihue) for $100/night. I would love to get that price for the Marriott.
Kauai Sands is $51 on expedia.com for a superior room in Kapaa.
They had the Aston for $85 and the Castle condo for $109. for a one bedroom with ocean view.
icceu2..where did you see the Marriott Lihue deal for $100?
We had drinks at Duke's last month and looks like its going through a major renovation but looks like they might be finishing up.
Maybe it's the Tip Top!!
ksucat, it was a tag on to a winning bid on biddingfortravel.com
gracias mamacita!
Oh Randy!!!!!!!!! Where art thou????
<<<Why not name your own price and bid for a better hotel on Priceline? I wouldn't use hotwire for a hotel over priceline.>>>
Hotwire will cost you few dollars more than Priceline, but you can usually guess the hotel on Hotwire, which you absolutely cannot do on Priceline.
sf, if you do your homework you can pretty well figure out which hotel you will get on priceline based on the star ratings, or at least you can narrow it down and figure out if you want to bid or not. I have made some bids and been pleasantly surprised and unpleasantly suprised. The unpleasant surprises were when I bid on less than a 4* in major metro areas.

Since Randy doesn't seem to want our help, I guess we can makai finish her plans! Gotcha a car yet Mak?
There are some crappy motels in Lihue. I hope Randy doesn't get stuck in one of those rat holes!
Randy's op name is Randyforgt...hee hee

hell, let's talk amongst ourselves for our next Kauai trip..
thinking using my 1 week freebie Marriott points at the Waikola(sp) at Poipu..icee, you stayed there..any advice?
ksucat, how did you get a free week at the Waiohai? Yes, we stayed there and enjoyed it. Get a garden view room and not an ocean view. Our ocean view was over the parking lot with a sliver of a glimpse of the ocean.

When ya going back? We were not planning to go back until 2011, but the real icee and I were talking just this afternoon and wishing we were on Kauai. Our favorite place to stay is at the Pono Kai in Kapaa. But, for a FREE week, we will take what's offered.
iceeu2..
I have over 100k in Marriott points so its about a week at the Kauai property last I checked..have a week at a Starwood property too and thought about the new St. Regis..see that room rates came down half from $795 to $350 on expedia.
So the ocean view rooms are over a parking lot?
I poked my head in when we had drinks at Red Salt and looked like the hotel was oceanfront and rooms to the left and right of the pool bar had views but I was dodging chickens..are they sacred in Kauai like cows in India?
Yep....ksucat, where do you live?
>>>sf, if you do your homework you can pretty well figure out which hotel you will get on priceline based on the star ratings, or at least you can narrow it down and figure out if you want to bid or not. >>>
While you can narrow it down on Priceline, you can very often identify the actual hotel on Hotwire.
ksucat, we stayed at the Waiohai summer of '07, and I think icee2's advice re gardenview rooms is not exactly correct. The ocean front rooms are the buildings actually at the beach, the ocean view rooms are anything with a glimpse of the ocean (which is what she had), but the garden view rooms are everything else, including rooms (our first one until we relocated) that actually overlook the parking lot (ex. back of Bldg. 4). There are garden view rooms with gorgeous views of the interior of the horseshoe -- but the rooms in the back of the same buildings will not be as nice. BTW, the units are typical Marriott time share (very nice, not very Hawaiian, though), the interior hallways are hospital-like, but the grounds are simply gorgeous. (look at the traveler's photos on trip advisor -- they're very accurate). It's right across the street from the little shopping center where Roy's and Keoke's are.
Aloha icee... and all you Kauai lovers... er uh hellhole... hehe.

I'll save every dollah on priceline over hotwire for hotels... but sf I'm not bidding 2 or 3 star either... and I only bid in major metropolitan areas. My absolute best score was in Boston and DH called the front desk and flirted his way to a corner suite in a 4* on the river for only $78 p/n (reg rate $275)... just fabulous digs for our treck from Chicago to watch the Bears play the Pats three years ago.
ICEE.. check it out. I'd been pricing hotwire for cars 10/31-11/7 on Kauai... ridiculously high, when, much to my surprise, I keyed in our dates and got $2.95 per day for a mid-size. KID YOU NOT! I booked as fast as my fingers could type, knowing it could vanish w/ a breath, and I got it. So 7 days in a mid for $57 for the week out the door. We'll see if it holds up. A gift from God. hehe.
I'm still holdin my ressie w/ carrentalhawaii.com which is the best I could fine outside of the glitch w/ hotwire... I'll let you know how it works out.
So aloha is in my bones... ready or not... here I come!!
~smooch~mak
smooches, mak! Gotta luv those glitches!
Guys,I'm back now just been very busy at work-thanks to all of you for the great ideas on Kauai. The Girlfriend is thinking VRBO,I prefer looking around a little more,we leave in two weeks. Now for the really important help(advice) I need.Where is ther a GOOD sportsbar open in the early AM in Kauai.Got to watch the big GT-Wake Forest game on Nov 7th! Go Jackets!
Update..it's 304am-I'm a real night owl...Expedia has Aston Aloha Beach for $63/night..should we book it? Just me and the SWMBO...(She who must be obeyed
I like the location of the Aston Aloha Beach, right across from Lydgate Park. There are also excellent prices now at Aston Islander on the Beach, at $99 per night. The rooms are a bit nicer, with kitchenettes. The grounds and pool are pleasant. The location at Coconut Plantation Marketplace is good because you can walk to several inexpensive places to eat. Not a swimmable beach, however, so depends which is most important. I know many people are happy with the bidding route, but I would never risk an unpleasant surprise for my vacation lodging.
Randy,
IMO
I think the Lydgate Park area of Kauai is the least attractive hotel area on the island. Hotels in Hawaii are a bargain now, so this is the time to pay up(a little) and get a much nicer place to stay. You are better off hunting a good air/hotel package if you are planning a trip from the mainland than to try to save a few dollars a night on a hotel room
Randy, if your gf is playing around on vrbo check out Waipouli Beach Resort. I just saw where one of the units we had stayed in is renting for $129 in November. It's a beautiful place. Like Frank said, there are so many bargains right now, you might as well pay a few bucks and stay in a nice place. FYI, Aston has that same rate of $63 on their own website, so you might do better booking directly with them(if that's where you want to stay), and try for an upgrade once you get there.
I'll look into Waipouli Beach Resort. Will reply from the work breakroom today if/when I can get on one of the two PC's
Randy, what did you decide to do?
Still unsure, been busy here in Georgia.i know it's getting down to crunch time,it may be Islander on the beach condo thru VRBO.Just got my property tax bill-ouch $2200.00.Aston has some deals too.
I like the east side! Easy to take day trips in any direction. Lots of restaurants in all price ranges, several walking distance from Islander on the Beach. Units have a little kitchenette, so you can keep snacks and light meals on hand. Better grounds, decor. and location than the other Aston properties, IMO. For a budget-friendly trip, I think you're on the right track.
Thanks Barbara....After I find out if i will have Friday off we will book for a Friday arrival,if not we arrive on Saturday.Better chance for First Class on the Friday flights!
Well folks it's the Islander on the Beach/3rd floor ocean front room for $820.60 that includes all taxes, plus they gave me a late checkout on the day we leave Kauai. All done through VRBO.I'm ready for the Aloha State!
Randy,
When is your trip? If you're there next week, I'll wave as we drive by enroute from condo on south shore to condo on north shore. I needed a 2 bedroom this time, but I am considering Islander on the Beach for my next solo visit to Kauai. Please post a report to let us know how you like it.
I've stayed in other places near Coconut Plantation, but I think IonB has nicer grounds. I would like to stay someplace where I don't need to get in a car everytime I want a bit of shopping or a quick meal.
Have fun Randy and Barbara and makai1 and all the rest of you lucky ducks who have chosen to spend your time off on the hell hole once again!
Barbara....we arrive on the 6th and depart on the 13th.I may connect @LAX and go to Vegas to watch GT-Duke at the Vegas GT club's watch party if we did'nt go overboard on the holiday budget in Kauai! If not we will fly back to ATL from LAX...On another note this trip to Kauai will bring back family memories in many ways.Kauai-1988 was my first trip to Hawaii,I took my mom,her 1st trip to Hawaii also.We both could not get Dad to go,he never really liked flying that far.Dad died Feb 1989-retired Delta, enjoyed golf, and I'll always regret I did'nt work harder to get him to go.....
Randy, you live in Atlanta?
The Islander??? Hmmmmm. Never heard of it.
Randy...no elevator, BTW so I hope you travel light.
They also have a live webcam so you can wave at any snowbound East Coast friends.

Iceeu, yup,I was born in ATL and now live in Griffin,40 miles south...Kal-Looks like I'll be doing more baggage lifting! LOL, I work DL-ramp @ATL.I'm the ramp pro who always gently handles your checked bags! hehehe. I am sooooo ready for Kauai....Aloha!
jojo...Barstool #4. Usually at 3-ish then maybe again at 7ish.

Arrive 12-30 at approx 4pm.
Randy....
Kal, see ya there! Feel I already know you and Mrs Kal from my short time on this forum! DH and I divide our time between East Shore and Poipu. We will be down the beach at our golden oldie Mokihana timeshare then! We're celebrating our 40th anniversary this trip so will have to buy you 2 a drink! Have enjoyed your advice even all the hellhole stuff AND we have walked past the SB tons of times but never stopped. Our loss!
