You can drive to Government Camp via the Historic Columbia River Highway and I-84. At Hood River (a delightful town), take OR-35 to Government Camp--you will have spectacular views of Mt. Hood along the way.
It is possible to visit Mount St. Helens as a day trip from Portland; however, my choice would be to spend at least one night on the Oregon Coast. Cannon Beach is a pleasant town about 1 1/2 hours from Portland.
HTTY
Agree with HTTY, Stay in Hood River if you can't stay at Timberline Lodge (near Government Camp).
From Hood River go over the "Bridge of the Gods" and go west on WA 14 to Carson. Go north on FS 25 all the way to Randle with a side trip over to Windy Ridge Viewpoint to see the east side of Mt. St. Helens. You can go west on US 12 to get back to I-5 to go back to Portland or the airport (PDX).
You should also visit the coast for one or two nights.
Coming back south on I-5 you can cross at Kelso and go west on US 30 to Astoria.
If it is rainy, go visit Powell's Books in downtown Portland.
The Tri-Met red line is good to get from downtown right to the airport.
What's with the all-capital letters? Think you will get better answers that way?
