4 night Itinerary Help for Fall Colors in Mid October

Hi,
Me and wife will be flying in from SFO to Boston on October 12. Flying out of Boston on October 17 late evening.

We are both in our early 30's and will be accompanied by our toddler who is 16 months. Looking for advice on a rough itinerary on where to setup our base for 2 nights each in different parts of Vermont/NH

We are looking to spend 5 days/4 nights on a slower pace to enjoy fall colors and New England countryside. Looking for recommendations for a town where we could stay for 2 nights each and be able to go and see stuff in 1-2 hour radius. First time in the new england area and excited about fall colors....

Appreciate your advice!

Oct 12 is getting late to get here plus you might have trouble finding lodging. Although color seemed to start early, we had a spell of hot weather and things seems to stop changing so quickly but I think you should stick to southern and central areas.

Because you have a toddler, I'm going to recommend Concord NH. It has a walkable downtown and some half decent restaurants. From there you can head in any direction depending on color. For example, it's an hour or less to the seacoast where if it is warm you could walk the beach. If you take Rt 4 then 16 you can take an easy hike at Wagon Hill Farm. There's a trail that goes down to the water and then along the shore and loops back to the farmhouse. But, if there's still color, you might want to head north via I93 to the mountains. Real close to Concord is Beech Hill Farm for ice cream and a giant sand hill and trucks for children. Also farm animals and petting zoo. You can pick apples at a variety of orchards in the area. Some offer wagon rides. From Concord, head out Pleasant Street to Hopkinton. Or take a different route to Carter Hill Orchard which has a nice little playground from children. It is also one of the hawk migration observation areas (check for migration times, might be over by the time you are here). If you continue thru Hopkinton and Contoocook you come to Warner NH with the option of an easy hike up Mt. Kearsarge. Gould Hill Orchard in Hopkinton does not have a playground but it has a pretty view and is making their own hard cider. Not sure if they are having hard cider tastings right now.

The free weekly Hippo Press lists events that might interest you.

The quiet southwest corner of NH is very pretty. You can head to VT via I89 which is actually a pretty drive or head south to Rt 101 which goes thru several pretty towns. If you take I89 I would head to Norwich Vermont's farmers market on Saturday. It is very festive with live music. You can buy some treats to enjoy and sit on the grass to listen to music. If you take Rt 101 you can head to Brattleboro VT's farmers market. Also festive. Check dates because some of the outdoor markets are ending soon. Although much closer to me I haven't been to the Concord NH farmers market in a long time. It's a nice market but I don't think they have music.

I'm not so familiar with leaf peeping in VT since we usually stay home, avoid traffic and look out our own window. You'll find beautiful scenery all over the place so choosing where to stay depends on what else you want to do. Your little one is a little too young for the Montshire Museum in Norwich. You might head to Lake Champlain area and a ferry ride across just for the ride. Burlington is a wonderful city with a pedestrian only Church Street area of shops and restaurants, frequently something going on. Some towns have harvest people to see (scarecrows). I would avoid things like the Ben and Jerry's tour because it's crowded and I don't think would be toddler friendly. If you get there early, there's a deli/ice cream place in Burlington where you can eat on the deck and watch the sun go down over Lake Champlain. Not a great view but decent. Although it's north, the climate around the lake is warmer so color might still be good during your visit.

Vermont will be past peak.

Wolfeboro NH would be a good base if you can find any lodging. Hotel clerks will help direct you to the nicest day drives.

Maine color will be along the coast at that time. Again, if you can find availability, drive to the Kennebunks. If lodging is unavailable, Scarborough would be a distant second as a choice, usually you can find something there. Nice drives out to Shapleigh, Lake Arrowhead, Standish, Naples, Sebago.

Watch your drive times back into Boston, there is lots of traffic from 4 to 7pm (not sure how late your flight is?)

Possibility for lodging near Wolfeboro:
Birch Knoll Motel
Belknap Point Motel
The Windrifter
Grand View Motel

Near the Kennebunks:
The Seaside Inn
The Rhumb Line Resort
The Fontenay Terrace Motel

Since you'll be in Boston what about staying in Mass?
