4 hr layover in DC, sightseeing?
My 17 yo son and I are flying to Boston June 27 with a 4 hr afternoon layover in DC. I wonder if you think we would have time to use the subway to visit any sights? Of particular interest would be the capital, the White House, and the Jefferson and Lincoln memorials

IMHO, even a 4 hour layover at Reagan would not provide enough time for sightseeing. What happens if you don't get back to the airport in time? Then you'll also have to go back through security. I would not risk it.

ITA. Plus, if you are flying into Dulles, it would take 2 hours to get in and out of the city. You MAY have enough time to visit the Air Museum near Dulles, but I'm not sure if there is a shuttle or if you'd have to taxi.

It does. One close place you could go would be Arlington National Cemetery. It is only 2 metro stops from DCA.
Metro maps, etc. http://www.wmata.com/metrorail/systemmap.cfm
Arlington National Cemetery (closes at 7 this time of year)

Arlington National Cemetery is open to the public at 8 a.m. 365 days a year. From April 1 to Sept. 30 the cemetery closes at 7 p.m.; the other six months it closes at 5 p.m.

There's time for a tourist stop or two, as long as you head back to the airport before 6:00.
In 90 minutes, you could taxi to the Jefferson memorial, walk around there and FDR and end up at Lincoln and Vietnam memorials. Then hail another cab to get back to the airport (subway will be crowded with commuters at that hour, and not terribly convenient to those sites anyway).
Or if you want to use Metro only, go to the Capitol and start walking downhill til time runs out and pick up the subway at Federal Triangle or Smithsonian.
If you want a drive-by glance at all the locations you mention, get into a taxi at National and tell the driver what you want and take a tour with the meter running (total would be about 20 miles), returning to the airport.
