4 days in New York for the first time - suggestions on what to do please
Me and my boyfriend are going to New York on the 15th July for 4 days and 4 nights. Have never been and want to see IT ALL. Any suggestions on itineries would be most appreciated as it all looks so vast.
we are also going to Cape Cod for 4 days and Washing for 4 days so any help there would be appreciated also

I'd also suggest ging to the destinations section of this website and reading about what there is to do in the places you're visiting. Everyone's interests are different, so what I like might not appeal to you at all.

No specific order:
1. Empire State Building (go to top)
2. Ground Zero
3. Statue of Liberty & Ellis Islad (take ferry from Battery Park & you can do this the same day you go to ground zero)
4. MOMA and/or Metropolitan Museum of Art
5. Buy half price tickets to Broadway show (buy @ TKTS booth on Broadway)
6. Visit Strawberry Fields / John Lennon area in Central Park
1. Empire State Building (go to top)
2. Ground Zero
3. Statue of Liberty & Ellis Islad (take ferry from Battery Park & you can do this the same day you go to ground zero)
4. MOMA and/or Metropolitan Museum of Art
5. Buy half price tickets to Broadway show (buy @ TKTS booth on Broadway)

One of the best things you can do for your trip is to get a book on New York, like the Fodors book. That way you can pick the things you want to see and have an idea of where things are located.
Alot of visitors try and plan things and don't realize how long it takes to get around the city, so my best suggestion is to pick sites that are close to each other so you spend more time site seeing and less time in transit.
Dowtntown (Wall St. Area)
Staten Island Ferry and Ferry to Ellis Island
Wall ST.
Ground Zero (also Century 21 for some shopping)
Trinity Church
St. Paul's Chapel
South St Seaport (half price TKTS booth there too)
Battery Park (memorial to WTC is located there right now)
Chinatown
Little Italy (old St. Patricks Cathedral)
From there walk up Broadway through SoHo to the Village.
That's one great day of site seeing.......
Have a great time.

The Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty are probbly the two biggest time wasters in NYC - often with huge lines (as in hours).
Instead of the ESB do Top of the Rock. You can buyt advance timed tickets - so no waiting - and IMHO the views are better.
If you want to visit (go inside) the Sttue of Liberty you need to buy tickets for this and the ferry far in advance (and they do sell out). Even with advane tickets there are still long line. To do the Statue of Liberty and Ellis island including the ferries planon at lest 6 hours.
Separately, you can't do it all in just 4 days. So - if you give us some idea of who you are and you intrests people can make specific suggestions.

There's another post on this forum that discusses just how hard it is to get tickets, how expensive they are, and how bad the lines are for the ESB. It is what it is, so it may be worth it to you. But that same post also had a LOT of recommendations like the one from NY traveler saying go to Top of the Rock.
I think the trip to the Statue is a waste (NOT the Statue itself, let's be clear); Ellis Island is more interesting. And the SI ferry is nice because it's a simple cruise, completely free, and allows great photo ops. I last went on it on 9-3-01 and don't know that I will again . . .
As for museums: the Met is world class, the MOMA is exceedingly good, and if they're still doing jazz in the Planetarium on weekends (Fridays?), that's pretty cool too.

Re: Statue of Liberty - if you have a limited time in the city - I would agree that spending lots of time getting on the boat to SOL could be just a lot of lost time. If you want to see that site - as mentioned - the free Staten Island ferry gives you a great view plus (to me, anyway) the more spectacular view of the lower Manhattan skyline from the harbor.
Don't miss -walking through Times Square at night for the greatest display of lights anywhere on earth - nothing like it anywhere.
If you visit the Metropolitan Museum take one of their tours - they have a limited number during the summer, though.

BTW-MoMA is more than exceedingly good
MoMA is the finest Modern Art Museum in the world. It not only owns and exhibits seminal works but maintains a deep and rich collection of most imortant modern gemres.
