4 College Kids @ Mardi Gras
I'm going to New Orleans this weekend for Mardi Gras (23-27). I'm really excited and have looked at the boards for as much info as possible. I was just wondering if there are any special tips for enjoying N.O. during the crazy Mardi Gras weekend. Will a lot of the tours be closed? Also, any suggestions on what to do, see, and eat is much appreciated. Thank you.

Are you serious? You're going to Mardi Gras and looking for tours?! Special tips - stay as close to the walls on Bourbon Street as possible. Also, STAY out of the alleys! Almost anywhere you eat you'll love the food (get away from Bourbon Street and the Quarter though). A couple of good places: Red Bean Cafe (I think that's the name) - great for breakfast - Tennessee Williams supposedly wrote Streetcar Named Desire there, Commander's Palace for brunch. You may want to do a search on this board for other places. Also, you may need to make reservations and/or just be prepared to stand in line for quite awhile. Visit the Garden District. Mardi Gras is just a big party. This is something that everyone should do once in their life - very different than you've probably experienced before! Have a good time, but be safe.

Also, wear tight jeans and keep your money in a pocket that will be difficult for someone to stick their hands in without you knowing. During Mardi Gras, the crowds are so thick that it would be easy to have your pocket picked without your knowledge. My hubby went several years ago with some buddies. He's 6'1", muscular, athletic, and 220 lbs. He said the crowds were moving him along against his will. Have tons of fun. Be careful.
