3 nights in NYC 1/28-1/31

I am shopping a hotel in midtown...away from Times Square and near Central Park. Recommendations from friends include The Blakely, The London, Hilton Club Midtown, The Elysee, Hotel Intercontinental. I don't need a huge room, but a two sink bathroom is always nice. As quiet as it can be in NYC would be nice. Clean, good service, decent value high on list (aiming for $300 or less, but slightly more ok) I would love to walk/use subway as much as possible with short cab/uber rides at night.

Potential activities: Met Museum, a broadway play, lunch at MOMA, walking through Central Park, dinner at The Daniel.

Is it working against me this time of year that I have not already booked?

Rates in NYC in January are usually most reasonable. (My friends and I have been doing brief January theater-and-museum get-aways the past few years.) Do a preliminary search on travelzoo.com. I see the Library hotel (41st and Madison) among the listings. We have never stayed there but it seems to get excellent reviews on tripadvisor.

The London holds a special place in my heart since we had our very small private wedding in our suite there. It's a vey nice hotel -- all suites and wonderful bathrooms. Often has special rates around $329. Just depends. This should be a good time for special prices.

We also take a yearly trip in January or February. I think you should look for specials at the websites of each of your favored hotels. I had emails earlier from The Blakely and there were good deals. I was looking to spend less, so went with The Morgan, where we've stayed before.

I wonder about dinner at Daniel. Is it a hard reservation?

What night are you planning on going?

As for central park, Jan is not the best time to visit since trees are bare and grass is brown and crunchy. Not sure of activities at this time. Go to the web site of the Central Park Conservancy to get detailed info on park sights and activities and check out if there are any ranger walks available.

Rates are at their lowest at this point so if you check booking.com you should come up with a lot of options - unless you want a real luxury place which will be way above $300 - even in Jan.

@foolforfrance I don't think waiting this late to make a reservation is going to hurt you at all in late Jan. Hotels seem to have plenty of availability, but your budget is not sufficient for a hotel like the London. And not all the hotels on your list are close to Central Park. All are well located and would give you the option of walking to a lot of places (provided the weather allows). I'd simply do a search on Expedia or some other hotel booking site to see what is available and what your options are. I like the Viceroy, the Le Parker Meridien, and the Residence Inn and Courtyard (which share a building on 54th St./Broadway. All four of these are well within your price range, and the Residence Inn is pretty cheap, has big rooms, and is midway between Broadway theaters and Central Park. The latter is a brand-new hotel and has some wonderful views to boot.

@tuscanlifeedit Daniel is always a difficult reservation if you don't want to eat at 5:30 or 10:30, even in January and February. Even then you need to make reservations 3 or 4 weeks in advance. It's best to call.

So sorry, foolforfrance. You wrote Central Park and I thought Grand Central. In your desired area, I agree with Doug's suggestion of le Parker Meridien.

We liked the Omni Berkshire on 52nd between Madison and 5th. Great location away from Times Square. Join the Omni guest program (free) and they'll deliver lovely hot coffee/tea to your room every morning! Rates are good this time of year.

Doug Stallings: I get a rate of $249/nt for the London Suite.
I will check the Courtyard and Le Parker Meriden.

Tuscanlifeedit: Our friends are handling the reservation at the Daniel.

Thanks all!

If you can get the London for $249 that's a great deal and I'd jump on it. Great location too.

Doug Stallings:

I can get a Friends and Family rate at the Courtyard you mentioned for $157 for th/fri and $172 for Sat. My only concern is that while courtyards are good and consistent at what they provide, they can be a little vanilla. But maybe in NYC where the competition is on a higher level for hotel business, I will have a different experience. I would be paying $568 for the entire stay which is great.

A travel agent friend of mine just sent me a rec'd for The Benjamin Hotel. She has a great price w/ perks to offer that meets my $300/nt goal. What is your opinion of it's location:
125 E. 50th St., at Lexington Ave.? The National Restaurant sounds really good too. I have read a lot of reviews on Tripadvisor and street noise seems to be an issue w/ the side of the hotel facing Lexington Ave....the one w/ the views . At least there is one side that is quieter, the 50th ave one. Oh well, a good night's sleep is more important than a view.

godesstogo: checking your place today

No comparison in style and comfort between the Marriotts and The London suites. I'd jump at that rate.

I didn't like the Benjamin, which I stayed at for 3 nights a couple of years ago via Priceline. Location is OK, but the decor, trying to be sophisticated, only felt gloomy. The lobby was always mobbed with young folks trying to use the free internet rather than pay for an in-room connection (though that might have abated in this era of phones). I found the staff to be less than professional when dealing with small requests. I still get emails from them, this week is a deal from $179 through the end of January.
